I think its more the fact that its the standard subframe (cones and hilo's) just with the rear brace cut out.

But thinking about its, it its all bolted up properly the rear mounts should keep it solid...

well im no engineer and i see what your saying Robert. Its quite crazy how much of the MOT is down to the testers discretion. If the tester doesnt know about a certain type of car and where the strength lies in that car then it could fail on something it shouldnt. So yeah how do they know that the structural strength has been dangerously reduced.

I know a tester that will fail a land-rover on body rust....in places it shouldn't fail from. All because he doesnt know that the strength is in the chassis. So it can only fail on body rust if it is within 12" of a chassis mounting point.

Appreciate it Jim, but I'm gonna get it done this week - it's still at the garage so they can do the welding, and I should be able to do the rest.
Cheers though - you're always welcome round for supper any time anyway!

I had coil over on the back, so the cut out section of subframe wasn't an isue, same a a rear beam.

Played with it yesterday, fairly sure it needs a steering rack - tightened up the column as tight as I could, as there's still tonnes of play. Poop

what state are the splines on the column? you could still be getting play from this; also check the rack is bolted up tight - it could be this moving

I'll whip the column off when I get a chance.

Between the pinch bolt in the column, there should still be a gap even with the bolt done up tight. If there isn't, then the splines will never close up properly. Check this first.

I remedy this by removing the column, clamping the pinch bolt up tight, then running a hack-saw along the split, removing material and hence opening it out.

I've had to do this to at least three mini columns over the years - much eassier than swapping out a rack!

Deffo needs a steering rack. I took the column out, and put a set of Mole Grips on the spline on the rack - there's probably 10 degrees of play!! Scary really.

I think I'm going to grab a refurbed rack from minispares, unless anyone can tell me they're shite?

IMO I'd get a new rack and not a recon.

Mike, how did you do yours so quickly? I thought you had to drop the front subframe out?

you can support the car on stands then lowe the subby on a jack by undoing the tower and floor mounts... gve you just enough room to change the rack... need to be careful of the brake lines tho..
