carl, If you do drill into the gallery to allow oil flow is 9thou about the right end float, on a n/a motor of course? I assume this is because the bead of oil will take up say 2-3 thou in space?

i doubt the oil film will amount to as much as 0.003" stef, but i cannot see any probs with clearences this big,

if i'm honest i couldn't tell you the clearences on my engines, other than its no less than 0.003-4".

iv'e not had thrust probs for 18 years ,

I allways have trubles with new trusts, generally they are too tight, it always end with two new ones on clutch face, and two old ones on the other side.
They are generally bend in rapidly ,but a little help with a "marbre ( true flat face)" or at least a thick window glass with 1000 paper will help to start with a flat trust, and so you'll now that the clearance setted isn't only a built one but the resultant one,
their is no point to enlarge the clearance as much as a race engine, since a turbo one make is power with a lot less revs,
then to help your trusts you should finely make a chamfer , this only on the clutch side on your upper bearing , this from the central groove to the side, this will assure constant oil feed to your trusts and will prevent metal contact,

forgotten to say,
you should also polish these bearings, the white deposited stuf is easily polished with a very soft cotton stuff and oil, it will prevent the deposits on the crank journals
