How good are you at push starting? that saves a starter motor and a battery. Dont need an alternator, can have a shorter fanbelt then.

But seriously, isnt weight saving more noticeable when its rotating or unsprung?

you do need either a battery or alternator, something has to power the spark

is there much difference in weight between carbon fibre and fibreglass when it comes to 1 piece fronts, roof skins and doors

also 3mm and 4 mm polycarb windows,

rear bulkhead can any weight be taken from there, most ppl i have spoken yo say dont touch it, it'll seriously affect vehicle rigidity

i was talking to the guy with the blue sprint looking mini at mitp last year (it was parked near the don and the twinnie), im sure he said that weighed up at 410kgs

For panels, there is no weight advantage using CF rather than GRP. If you were making a structure, then CF could be made lighter. Most CF stuff you can buy is generally GRP with CF as the outer layer as I understand.

The rear bulkhead is a funny thing. I would have no worries removing it from the the arches up and then putting a brace across the C pillar and covering in Alloy.

if any of you guys would learn about "light" study Colin Chapmans cars 8-) in the BBC series THE POWER AND THE GLORY, there is a interwiev with one of his mechanics, once he was working on a formula 1 car, and Chapman asked what he was doing??? just fitting some parts to the car, the mechanic replied--- no way those washers are going for a ride on MY race car---take them off.
Chapmans idea of the perfect race car, was that it did the race (and presumely win) and then collapsed after passing the chequred flag, if it could do a full victory lap, it was "overbuilt" .

And for the real weight savers, drill out the big towerbolts (if fitted) after that, put them in a lathe and make the head concave,
this take almost 3 pounds out, you can also have alloy spacers made for the front schocks, if you dont go all the way and fit coilovers, with a beam axle at the back, as already said

The real weight savers are things like a Titanium front subframe, weight 11lb. Drilling out towerbolts saves a bit, but throwing them in the bin saves a lot more.

As Tom says you have to look at every thing and ask how can this be made lighter, or is it even needed.

Hopefully the Maguire of death will be finished in time for Avon, no idea what it weighs but when we moved the rolling shell to the barn the two of us lifted it on an off the trailer.

EDIT: I take that back, hopefully it won't be finished as my balls are no where near big enough to drive it.

Sorry but if anyone is going to go down it a blaze of glory it will be me.

I reckon triangles are the way ahead, strong tessellate with minimum wasted space between the holes.

the quality and fit of the carbon weezel products seem top notch, but I have heard that they use a very weak resin to glue it together, resulting in parts which is not especially strong. Am I right?

quick update. the clubman weight is 640kg with full tank of gas. without me in it.

only weight saving i have done is taking out the sparetyre *tongue* then its rusty in the boot floor. so that saves a bit :)

SO i decided to go for lighter window's and fiberglass boot and doors. and se what that does ..

how much stability does the doors give the car? do i need to get a rollcage if i replace the doors for weak fiberglass doors?

Ben! Your products could be lighter and stronger still. I say this because i presume your still faffing about with wet layup`s.
