By the sounds of it the bottom end has gone again. It shouldn't have gone becuase it's a good crank, new bearings and new rods. So I don't know why it's happened.

I'm under no illusions however! It must have been something that I have done wrong when building it. I just don't understand what! Bearings went in clean with abit of oil on them, crank span nicely when torqued up on the mains, still span nicely when torqued up on the bigends. So when I have swapped the engines over I will strip it and find out.

Hopefully it's not screwed up the rods and I can sell them on and regain some funds. Also got the head gasket to sell on, new timing belt kit, ported head. So hopefully I can regain some sort of cost from it.

Oh well onwards and upwards.

its a CA, to be expected, same for the SR, they both eat big ends for fun, good luck wiht the rebuild bit if i were you i would be giving serious thought to an rb25* or 1/1.5/2jz swap :)

* i say this as the rb26 is just as happy to rattle big ends as the CA and SR and you pay a serious premium for parts, a crank alone will run you more than a complete r33gts-t donor.

In all honesty i was thinking of droping an SR in there and probable will.

They seem alot more reliable than the CA and i havent heard all that many stories of them throwing thier ends......Have you come across alot Denis?

I would go RB25 but there are a few reasons im shying away from it:

Insurance....they dont really like the idea of me putting one in but arent too bothered about the SR

Expense....they arent that much more than a SR to buy but if anything goes wrong its a different story.

Then there is the plus sides for an RB:

The noise
The noise
reliable high power
oh and the noise!!

Shane: I still have alot of catching up to do in order to be worse of than you! Anyone would have thought im trying though!!

yes, to many for comfort, however, the bottom ends do seem more reliable than the CA's, most big end failures on these lumps i have seen are on engines with worn followers/ worn camshafts, blocked spray bars, you know the type badly maintained and/or wrong grade of oil, they seem very intolerant of such abuse! if you source a donor lump and can get under the cam cover to feel the camshaft and its got no wear ridge on the lobe peaks then chances are its a goodun. also look for the telltale grey powder on the dipstick.

Also be worth investing in an oil temperature gauge :)

Yeah the plan is for an oil temp and oil pressure gauge!

Pained me with the CA not knowing what was going on!!

Also getting a wideband on there so i know whats happening on that front.

I have a motor that has done around 70K lined up so i'll get the fella to knock the cam cover off and get me some pictures and info on the state of play.

I'll douple check it for myself when i pick it up to be sure.

TBH im going to be looking after it as best i know so as long as its in good condition when i buy it then all should be fine.

slightly off topic (seeing as it has already been brought up) but a 2JZ GE could be had for bout 100 quid if you know where to look people just cant get rid... and a 1JZGTE complete running supra dona say 300quid

you cannot beat the sound of a straight 6!!

This suprises me to be honest, I've had very little to nothing to do with Jap stuff, but I always thought they were super reliable, especially the engines which I thought were bombproof.

tom most toyota engines really are bomb proof, massively over engineered

nissan on the other hand have somewhat of a bad name surrounding them the engine are brilliant when they work but temperamental at the best of times parts in general are around 3 times the price

cannot comment on others really

The problem with fitting a 1/2JZ in there is fact that its more work that I can currently fit into my life and more money than I can currently afford!

The thing with the SR swap is that ican bolt it straight in with only swapping minimal bits over, crack out the soldering iron and have it running in a weekend!

The only extra expense SHOULD be a different rad (I can make the original work for the time being) and a good service!

I can use majority of the bits of the CA engine like the turbo and air flow sensor etc and I will only have to get a tubular manifold and bigger injectors before a remap should see an easy 350+ bananas. But I'm not sure I want to put that stress on a daily drivers engine. We will see. Afterall i'll only get bored!

I'm already dreaming of a nice FD hmmm 4 rotor noises!

Dennis, do you have much dealings with the RB20 engine?

Apart from the fact that i had might aswell just go straight in with the RB25.

I have the option to pick one up on the cheap and just wondering what thier reputation is like.

The SR that i had my deposit down on dropped a load of metal filings out with the oil when the guy was getting it ready for transport.

Shame, glad he was honest though!

Bottom ends are always going to suffer when not looked after properly. Cant beat the old RB, they are well over engineered, as long as they are maintained well then they dont give trouble.
