As you can see ive merged cyl1&4and used a seperate tube for cyl2&3.
merging the tubes takes ages as they are all on different plane and small changed were needed here and there.

the final model will be exact, notches and bends as they would be when fabricating. at the moment a couple of the tube merge and it look a bit messy

Thats the one mate, well thats how I'd make it. lol

At least now there are no sharp bends and its basically as short as it can be, being a side mount. I'd make it out of 1.5mm stainless then make a bracket to mount the turbo to the clutch cover...job done!

Cheer Matty, ive based the design on 1.5mm wall and 38.1mm Diameter

Im sure I remember talking to someone about manifold design, and the basic outline is to:

* make the primarys as short as possible
* Make sure they are within 10mm of each other but they should not be exactly the same length

I was told that if the primarys are all the same length it can cause a flat spot at certain RPMs. *oh well*

The bracket under the turbo needs to be able to accomodate quite a lot of expansion. I'm planning on using a couple of spherical joints that will allow some movement, but still support the weight.

Personally, I think that the 1.5mm wall thickness is too thin with 316 in this application, but worth a try.

Best make sure your welder uses a back purge else you will send loads of crap into the turbo on the first hard run.

Cheers Paul, i was also pondering thermal expansion of the mounting bracket, i was thinking whether a floating bracket could be used. seeing that its mostly a vertical load if i necked the bracket and kept the crossectional area down the heat transfer into the mounting bolts should be reduced. does this sound right or a i talking jibberish lol

Not to get too involved, but when I was thinking about a side mount design I always imagined I would put a flexible piece in to deal with expansion. I am not sure if they would take the heat though.

Mount it on long bolts with some springs sandwiched between 2 plates. that way they will dampen any vibration and allow for expansion. *wink*

Most of the expansion is going to be pushing the turbo away from the engine in the horizontal plane.

There will not be much vertical or front to back expansion as it is cancelled out due to the location of the turbo.

My current design project is an in-line rear wheel drive 1275 with a turbo over the gearbox, so I'm keen to use something like this.

i like your thinking matty. thanks for putting me straight paul, so if we allow the turbo to move/expanded horizontally it will take up the effects of heat

joe you reminded me of that classic moment where dougal and ted are playing a board game ,and theyve lost the litle model animal for the game ,and dougal says ''arh thats ok ted ,we can use one of those'' .and he points to a cow out of the window ,about 3 miles away ,and ted says speaking verry slloooowwwlly...

''no dougal ,this is small'' ,holding up a model ...........''and thats far away'' ,pointing at the cow . *laughing*

Just a couple of update pics. ive used a collector to merge the tubes into the turbo flange, but i run both pipes separately into the it.
