The trailer Gross weight cannot be higher than the unladen weight (kerb weight) of the tow vehicle. Likewise the max gross weight of the tow vehicle and trailer combination must not be greater than 3500kg.

Right Ok, I see this is still confusing for some so I will try and break this dow as easily as possible, but ultimately it still all depends on the tow vehicle.

The maximum gross weight of the trailer (MAM) is permissable weight that the trailer will carry INCLUDING its own weight.

The Maximum Gross Weight of the tow vehicle (MAM) is the permissable weight of the tow vehicle INCLUDING all the luggage and passengers.

The Maximum Gross Train Weight is the total weight of the Max Gross Trailer Weight and the Max Gross Tow Vehicle Weight

Legislation stipulates for Cat B licence you can drive any vehicle up to a weight of 3500kg PLUS a trailer (braked or un braked) up to 750kg.

BUT!!!

legislation also states that, where the trailer weighs MORE than 750kg The combined max gross weights of the tow vehicle and the max gross weight of the trailer cannot excede 3500kg, where the max gross weight of the trailer MUST NOT excede the UNLADEN (kerb) weight of the tow Vehicle.


Manufacturers use this information to calculate their towing capacities, and as such, the reason why you can only tow 1000kg with an MG ZR 160 is because the car itself only weighs 1145 KG. The Max gross trailer weight MUST be less than the keb weight of the tow vehicle irrespective of its power. Power of the engine only has an effect where there is not enough to start the vehicle/ trailer combination safely on a 12% hill.

I don't see why the max towing weight is so low taking into account the power of the car.

Various people I've met at shows/forums. They should but most don't because they are either pussies or they probably just don't want to talk to you.
