FreeSat HD or Freeview HD.

FreeSat has had the free to air HD channels for a while so you just need a standard satelllite dish and an HD satellite box (doesn't have to be a Sky one, see here, http://www.screwfix.com/p/hd-complete-satellite-kit/98603) or a newer TV with a freesat HD tuner built in (mine has).

Freeview HD is enabled once your local transmitter switches off analogue TV as they gain the extra bandwith and channel numbers once analogue is gone (happened in south Suffolk/Essex a couple of weeks ago but I have to wait until November for north Suffolk/Norfolk). Then you just need an HD freeview setop box (instead of an early setop box) or, again, a TV with a built in HD freeview tuner (again mine has).

No subscription, just the one-off cost of an HD satellite dish/box or HD freeview box or TV with built in HD satellite/freeview tuners.

Obviously you don't get the premium subscription channels without paying, but there is a fair bit of HD from the free to air channels and it will surely increase once analogue has gone and the airspace freed up.

According to the Freeview website, you should have four of the free HD channels available from your DVB-T2 HD tuner since July 20th.

Hopefully more will follow for all of us once the analogue signals are all turned off and the bandwidth gets freed up.

But it is an absolute myth that you have to pay for HD by subscription.....

It's just how much you can get for free and that will increase as the analogue transmissions get shut off.
