Ben, when installing on turbo cars, can/do you map the ignition from -pressure (vacuum) to +pressure (boost)?

So as to allow decent advance when cruising off boost?

AlexF, I agree that MJLJ would suit my current application to a T, but might use injection in the future, even if its not on the mini.

So it'd be false economy to skimp on the initial purchase.

Yes you can map from full vaccum to 21.5 psi. There are options to change the MAP sensor and a 30psi or 40psi can be fitted.

If you look at our turbo map you can see that the Y axis the numbers represent psi 0 - 255 = -14.5 - 21.5 pis (ish) 100 is around atmoshpheric. As you can see there is a huge part of the map that can be tuned off boost. We have not touched this much as our turbo does not do much crusing.

How hard is it to get a basic map to work from - or even one that suits my car already...?

As an update on my 998 project - I now have a turbo, intercooler and the EDIS bits. Am looking at the head and carb at the moment :)

Its easy to start a map...

just work out what your dissy is giving in terms od degrees of advance per 500 RPM... and in put that.

From there its a case of either guessing (dangerous - think melted pistons!). Or you can use det cans

Remember thou, you really need to wacth your Air Fuel Ratios as you play with the ign timing!

just check the std spec of a metty dizzy and go from there.

Det cans are used to hear the onset of detanation within your engine before it does any damage. i.e. the limits of advance which you can run.

To take a ign map...

You will need a rev counter and an ingition timing light.

1) Start engine and let it warm up - remember to plug up the vac advance.

2) connect up timing ligt.

3) take a reading of the number of degrees the ignition is advanced at 500 rpm intervals from idle up to its maximum advance (around 4-5k rpm will do).

A point to note is that the ignition time taken from the crank dampers and the scale on the timing chain cover is horendously unreliable! Its much better to use an "professional" timing light where you can dial a certain number of degrees advance into the timiing light itself and it then flashes to line everything up at TDC.

You can then use the flywheel inspection hole - its the hole thats covered by a plate (held on by two bolts) on the top of the flywheel covber (pan).

At TDC you can see a bolt (assuming pre -verto - I don't know what it looks like with a verto clutch). When the bolt is in the middle of the hole your at exactly TDC on the crank!

is that the same for all pre verto flywheels? i think my ultralite jobbie had 3 marker lines, or is that aswel as the bolt?

good point... I dont know... I'd imagin so as the bolt I'm on about holds the clutch cover on, so its probably the same on a ultralight flywheel.

If the engine isnt it, or the head is off the id be tempted to make some accurate marks somewhere you can point the gun to be 100%

Never know if the bolt holes align exactly etc on after market stuff. the clutch cover would still fit even if the holes were 5 degrees further round the PCD if you see where im coming from

the other to look at if you can see is whether the slot in the end of the crank is vertical or horizontal, (cant remember which). thats another way to look at it.

Only problem is that it only works with the first MegaSquirt. I was bummed by that. I'm thinking I'll probably be going with MSII... :(

I can only hope! I e-mailed with Renns (the guy that wrote the Palm software), and he has no desire to do it again...

Ben, that would be fantastic, because having a Palm to tune is, in my mind, the ultimate! I ALWAYS have my Palm with me, so I could do tuning anytime, anywhere...

Why the desire to use a palm? I don't think that i could see enough of the 16x16 display or even view the map in sufficient detail on something like a palm

also old laptops (which you want! nice easy and serial port'd) are soooooo cheap!

Totally... You don't even need a decent laptop - an ancient 486 is more than enough for all ECU's

Im glad we have to use serial ports at work for our turbine ecu's because it means ive got all the gear to connect to mine when i get it.

You are all correct there is not enough room to display all the bins on the Plam, it sort of scrolls. It is very good for tuning on the road as its small and quick changes can be made easily. However you will need a PC to configure all the settings and I prefer the laptop interface for the rolling road.

The thing about the palm is that it can do data logging too which is great in the hillclimber beacuse you don't need the laptop strapped to the floor.
