got to say, this has had me seriously considering a change (amongst needing something a bit more economical around town). I've been spoilt with Quattro for the last couple of cars and apprehensive to go back to 2WD.

Went and mooched around the local BMW dealers last weekend and see they now do Xdrive on the 3 series and coming soon on the 5 series. basically its a part time 4wd system. Topping it all, the 3.0 engine is only a couple of mpg off the 2.0. Downside is they have only been out for 9 months or so and nothing available 2nd hand and the spec'ed up new one has come in at £43k! I'll be waiting a few years I think as I'd rather boil my head than watch the depreciation
