It's better if you actually practice a joint too. Forget the butt joint to start with and lap the two panels. Then practice watching the weld pool melt both panels and run into a nice bead. If your smooth it will be a neat weld.

It shouldnt take too long to get the hang of it. I think they basically invented the Mug for monkeys to weld with. It can be tough on thin stuff tho especially if the wire feed is erratic which it usually is on cheap hobby welders.

Hi guys, hope Chalkie doesn't mind me posting this but it saves me starting another tbread that's exactly the same!

Finally bit the bullet and thought I better learn to weld, got myself a clarke 110, using 1.2mm steel as it's not a mini, co2/argon mix

I've used a welder before but never done any proper welding, just had a go on my mates to see what's like, I'm just going on the theory of 'make it sounds like sizzling bacon' *tongue*

1st ones are on the left, then just started playing around with the settings, any tips?

Other side:

Cheers!

Looks good and definitely good penetration but you would never just plonk a bead down, try some over laps, butts and plug welding.. least that way your practicing what you would actually be doing when it comes too it

try this website its a USA one but good for help and tricks and tips go down the metal joining part on the forum page

http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/index.php

or a uk site

http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/

go to the bar at the top of page and click on MIG and the are some good info on how to setup your welder etc.

any good welder will tell you its all about being comfotable and relaxed and just practice, practice, practice,

make sure the lead is as straight as possible that will help heaps, with the SIP welders there is a good mod to stop the wire jerking have a look on the
mig-welding-UK site and they tell you how to do it.

keep it up you are doing really well
