Cometic list it under Austin 1300cc, $86.50, 73mm bore, and 30thou thick.

Under MG Midget..they list a 74mm, 40thou thick 1275 gasket too.

It has two door mirrors and an interior rear view mirror.
Two mirrors? It only needs one. Think of the excess weight!!!

What about the boot floor? If this is steel, then it ticks every box I reckon.

Actualy you only need any wing mirrors on a 1971, so long as you'e got an iternal mirror. Think of the improved aerodymanics (ignore spelling)

it may just about be possible to get an MOT but that does not make it road legal.

Regarding emissions the ECU can be altered to make the fuelling whatever is required to pass the MOT.

Again not an issue being K reg it's only a visual inspection.

All the problems we have had are most probably due to the head gasket, which we finally found today, with the head gasket healthy the car ran at Avon Park with no problems at all, so I'm confident with the gasket sorted the rest of the cooling system should be Ok.

So what do you reckon changed since Avon to cause the gasket to go?

Lack of retorquing the head is looking favourite TBH....

My 3/16" socket allen key arrived today so hopefully I'll have the head off tomorrow and report further.

Are those not a similar type MED sell with their dry deck kits?

My money is the gasket - spoke to KAD about re torquing they reckon to have never done it in 17 years and never had a failure attributable to it. I must say the only leaks I had were oil ones when i used the old copper gasket. The 3 piece steel which ever make you go for are 100 times better.

No Idea what MED sell....but good chance Cometic make any MLS gaskets.

There arent that many gasket manufacturers out there.

Although...what is the idea behind this dry deck thing ? doubtful its the same gasket...as the Cometics listed will have all the correct waterway holes, for direct replacement for composite gaskets.

To add....

When I last built my V8, I did a cold re-torque..

Left it overnight, then slacked each nut by 180deg, then re-torqued.

Every bolt went a further 45 degrees or so over the previous torquing...which I was surprised at.

First time Ive ever tried that

Yes on a dry retorque , slacken each bolt/stud one at a time in correct sequence by 180 deg when cold , retorque to full , always gives 45-90 deg more turn on the torque wrench.
Its prob that amount of movement that allows the un retorqued gasket to leak.
doing it dry prevents coolent contaminating gasket sealant on first start up expansion
as far as KAD not having any gasket probs 'works comp. guineepig
springs to mind'

Carl / Tom - that cylinder head has never been re torqued, neither me or dave have ever bothered.

He had a copper gasket go about 13 years ago but since then no problems.

We both run cometic gaskets now, again never a problem even when forgetting to put the water pump on and near boiling the engine.

Nick; to be honest not that much to see. The fibre material between the large cooling holes behind the cylinders looks a little distorted, but the fire rings all look fine to be honest.

At present we've decided to try another BK450 for now, we'll soon see what happens I guess.

Been to KAD today Cometic gasket is the way forward at 74mm - p*sses all over the Raceline and 50% cheaper as well - top tip but they knew it. Had an issue with the fire ring hanging in the combustion chamber as raceline gasket like copper one is only 73mm but the cometic measures up @ 74.69mm.
