Ok then if a train is travelling along in one direction and a fly is travelling in the exact opposite direct and they collide, at the moment that the fly hits the front of the train it stops and changes direction (as its now stuck on the front of train) as the fly has changed direction at some point it must of reached the point where it had stopped to change direction. As the train was in contact with the fly at this point of direction change has the train also momentarily stopped? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fusion-Fabri..._homepage_panel

No, because the inertia of the train would ensure the train continued. The fly stops because it has less mass so the force needed for it to stop then change direction is obviously much less than for the train to stop and change direction. On 23rd Oct, 2009 sim_ou_nao said:

It is not so much inertia as kinetic energy. The fly has a miniscule level of kinetic energy compared to the train. Therefore when the fly hits the train the net change in kinetic energy of the train (its initial KE, minus the KE caused by the fly hitting it in an opposite direction) is so small that it is not noticeable to the train.

If I'm on a train traveling at the speed of light and I shine a torch in the direction of travel how fast does the light emitted by the torch travel?

you are inside so you are in a closed environment. if you shine the torch inside it will be going the speed of light in comparison the environment inside the cariage. |

IF you shined a torch at sun set or sun rise (assumming your on the Tropic of Capricorn or Tropic of Cancer at either peak winter or summer), would it take longer for that light to reach the sun due to the rotation of the earth (i.e. faster for sun rise)? On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

The light would get there at the same time, but the frequency of the light would be different due to the doppler effect. This is how they work out the direction of rotation of planets. It is also why a train sounds different when approaching, compared to when it has passed. Tim Rowe

heres one for you. You are in a passenger train traveling at 120mph. You stand at the front of the carage and jump, will you land in tthe same place? you fall the movement of the boat + the height you jumped. getting some serious air and brakeing your legs if the boat is fast enought comeing down the wave, elsewise you will jump up 2 foot and fall 2 foot 6 inches On 19th Feb, 2011 Miniwilliams said:
