Hey guys, just an update.the machinists are taking their sweat time over the quote, im hanging on for these guys because they are a family friend.

mean while i have been able to get a single hinge assembly rapidprototyped for the grand sum of nothing, big thanks to laserline. managed to source it through work, had to tell a few porkys but nevermind.
ive compared the model to the standard hinge, everything lines up nicely. the model was 3D printed, so its has some mechanical properties in X & Y directions but not in Z, so it wont give us any idea of strength.

As soon as i have got a quote and we've worked out the price we'll let you know.

A single hinge assembly in plastic weighs 25g, the guy i got to make this one said that they would be about £30 per assembly.

would those be strong enough for a carbon door with a poly window?

if yes, I see no reason not to do them in plastic?

I was thinking the same thing, the carbon weasels doors are 1.4Kg, i have no idea how much polycarbonate weighs, but if it were less then 3kg total it could be possible i think.
Also if the part was made using stereolithography it probably would have better mechanical properties compared to 3D Printing

i agree that in plastic/nylon they may take the weight of a lightened door, but one absent minded moment when you say, lean on it, or your lock doesnt click right and your brake suddenly, a gust wind takes it etc and youve lost your door

might never happen to you, but would def happen to me!

So Id rather stick with an over engineered alluminium, even if slightly heavier hinge for that reason

too skint to fork out for these at the mint hough

not being critical, just food for thought...

Thanks for your point of view Joey, i think your totally right, a decent safety factor is more important then lightness.

sorry Rob that was straight over my head lol

These hinges will not support a standard door with glass. They are for fully lightened doors only.

Finally the quote is in.
A set of four lightweight Aluminium door hinges with bolts is going to be £125+Postage.
The hinges are for doors which weigh less then 10kg. They weigh in at 91g/hinge a total saving of nearly 800grams and have a clevis pin feature for easy removal.

We plan to do only one production run. we need to get definite orders for 20 sets before we can produce them (sorry but we need to ensure all costs are covered as we wont be making any profit).
