No internet for 10 days? That is rough. I when nuts when lost power for about 5 hours haha.

All seems well now. Robocopy is doing its thing. 11GB copied so far and no errors reported yet. Time to get drunk and check progress in the morning

Well, it looks like robocopy was a success. It copied 119GB across. Everything seems to be there at first glance. I'll have a read over the log file tonight

Can I format and partition the drive during the clean install of XP? I found a good tutorial on partitioning during install but I'm just not sure if I can format it in the install or should I do that before I start installing XP

Yes, when you format the drive you can just type in the size.

Cheers Mike.

Well that was spectacularly tedious. Scrolling through 21MB of a .txt file to see what went wrong. A grand total of 14 files didn't copy. All due to accessibility. Most were windows security or system32 files which I assume will be replaced during reinstallation.

Reinstallation done (kinda) *happy* . XP is now installed again with a freshly formatted and partitioned drive. That's as far as I got since it was 5 o'clock once I got it working again

I have made a bit of progress recently. I am having trouble connecting to the internet though.

I can see my wireless network but I am getting "Limited or no connectivity". I have installed the Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller and Dell wireless 1390 WLAN minicard drivers. When I try to run Intel PROSet wireless installer, it tells me that the "Wireless LAN adapter driver" is not present. So what driver am I missing?

I am also getting a "windows installer service could not be accessed" when I try to run some programmes and drivers which is scaring the shit out of me. Any idea why this might be happening?

EDIT: Forgot the link to my drivers

don't use the drivers wireless utilities, use teh iwndows one. Are you giving it the right encryption key? Is it configured for the correct encryption method.

Check that the 'Windows installer' service is not set to dissabled in services in computer manager. Should be manual

Thanks Andy, I'll check those when I get home. I was using some 3rd party wireless utility so I will scrap that. I think the incription key is right but I'll double check.

Slightly off topic, but I have just been hit with the latest 'Windows XP AntiMalware 2010' Malware. I knew straight away what it was as it happened last year, to which end I installed antivirus and antispyware with the Router, windows and third party firewalls, yet this fucker still got through, on a surf by. I cannot even remember where i was. I looked into a fix and there seemed to be several different approaches, so I chose my weapon and fucked it up, lol. Ended up doing what I did last year and rebuilt the hard drive. I have just finished re installing everything.

Perhaps I should pay for some top rate anti virus/ malware software, instead of being a cheap skate.

On topic, Please bear with me as I have not read the whole topic, so if this is irrelevant, that will be why *happy*

I have had to replace my wireless router twice now as the wireless portion stopped working propperly. The PC was always trying to aquire an IP address from the DCHP, but always failed even though the wireless signal was full strength, the second was a sort of combination of the DCHP failure and the wireless portion dropping out the signal. Ethernet connection on both worked as they should. I am on my third Wireless router now in, ooh let me think, must be at least 5 years now.

I use SpyBot Search and Destroy which is free (but you can donate toward if you so wish)
I have been using it for the last 5 years and it is a very good piece of software.
Antivirus side I always use Kaspersky. Its the best purchaseable AV you can get IMHO. Don't bother with Norton or McAfee.
If you want free AV, go with AVG...

I have spybot and avg as I'm cheap. 3 routers in 5 years is about average. Mainly they are rubbish....

I also have a new sig *wink*
