ive finaly got my lsd fitted and the engine slapped back in, with no oil leaks atall!! (touch wood) many thanks to turbophil for helping me out with the cw&p in such quick time!

god i knew it was gonna be a bit of a pig to drive untill avons over and it goes on track only duties, but its like wrestling a fking bull!. it seems very twitchy and nervous, is that normal with a plate type lsd or do i need to look into my suspension setup a bit more?? ive never driven a car with one fitted before so its all a bit new to me :S
as it is front cambers about -1.5 deg, tracking is set dead ahead, and castors been left standard. on the back its just set to -1.0deg

any advice would me much apreciated!

oh and what oil does everyone use in their minis? it needs a change tomorrow because its just got some cheepo stuff flushing it through but im unsure whats best to use?

looking forward to avon now *happy*

Yes the plate type diffs can be a bit of a pig on tarmac to be honest!

The Quaife ATB is much more well behaved and would be my LSD of choice for a mini

cheers pete *happy*, will get some ordered asap.

yeah id heard good things about the quaife diffs, and if it was gonna do more road work than track it would have had one without a doubt.
ive heard a lot of good stuff about the plate types aswell so it was a case of suck it and see i suppose! will just have to live with it and hang on for dear life!

i think most understand its gonne be a pig, but it might be worth having a play with the toe on the front to see if you can tame it a bit. I cant remember which way it usually has to go to get it a bit better, as im sure its not right to have it set perfectly straight? not talking book figure here, but more race settings?

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

tbh it was just set straight because i dont have a tracking guage and i could feel it was miles out as it was, so straight ahead seemed like a good neutral figure to start with. it went much better like it so it was just left like it!
i'll have a play with it over the weekend and see what works or not as the case may be! although i think i just broke an engine mount tonight so i think a few parts could do with beefing up to take the abuse :S

cheers

Glad you got it up and running. *smiley*
How strongly is the diff set ? I run an LSD and don't find it to bad, infact i made a device for checking the strength of LSD's out of an old driveshaft, cutdown, with a nut welded on the end so you could put a torque wrench on it.
I used to have mine set lightly at 35lb, but changed the plate configuration this year and upped it to 45lb. It pulls stronger now, but it's not to bad.

suspension set-up is vital, and ideally you need to be looking into corner weights too

lol its just set to whatever minispares set it too phil :S i never thought to check it to be honest,
ah well suppose its only got to last long enough to get down the strip a few times at avon. then it'll get setup properly in the racer i suppose :S

Resident Cylinder Head Modifier

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

set your camber to the standard setting on the front

and KEEP! the rear to 0 *wink*

Set the castor to standard also, but bear in mind that altering the camber upsets the castor!

and dont lift off the gas on the corners as you go through them just power through steady!

or your in the deep stuff!

pete 1071s could you PLEASE place your EXCELLENT! *happy*write up in the FAQ or in the right section on Oils!

great wright up to say the least,

this will save many a highly tuned motor! going Pear shaped *smiley*

LSD's with a friction plate pack resist a diff action the more torque you apply through the unit. The amount of pressure applied to the friction pack is a result of the torque applied and the ramp angles in the diff. You can get ramps with different angles front and back that give different amounts of pressure on power / Over run.

On the oils friction diffs usually really appreciate an oil with a friction modifier in there. If a normal oil is used the diff can be very clunky. I've known cars where the diffs made a hell of a knocking noise when beeing pushed around corners. A change of oil and this noise was gone. I'm not sure if this is available in an engine oil though.

What sort of time will a LSD knock off your 1/4 mile?

Would fitting one be the last step after corner weights, tyre pressures, ride heights, damper settings, spring rates, weight reduction, slicks?

*wink* *wink*

lol well i upped my boost a tad this morning to see what effect it would have and christ almighty i couldn't even keep it in a straight line! the torque steer is pretty abysmal! im getting a bit more used to driving it now tho and as long as you hang on to it its actualy quite good *happy* and im starting to like it.

i need a new/better boost guage desperately now tho because i cant work out if mines reading right or not. its a cheepo tim one and it only reads up to 1 bar. what's throwing me is when the old plenum was on and it had the safty valve in it, it would blow when it was only showing about 1/2bar of pressure which i thought was about 7/8psi?, but i thought the valve was set to 10-12psi? so im not sure weather the valve was faulty and letting go early, or the guage is faulty and reading low! so im a bit weary of increasing the boost anymore :S
