Yo.

My car has developed a thud thud thud thud thud noise as a i drive. It's not the engine (not THAT sort of knocking). Its not the back of the exhaust, as thats solid mounted onto the rear subby.

It might be the center of the exaust, as it does run close to the body, but im not sure it is, as its too regular. The noise speeds up with teh speed of the car, and slows down with the speed of the car. it does not follow engine speed.

The noise only happens when i'm off the throttle, or very slightly on it (coasting along, or slowing down, speeding up is fine)

If i rock the back end of the car, it does make quite a few squeaks and what-not, but Im not convinced that its a knacked subby or anything.

Very confusing. anyone got any ideas, or how i can check while driving?

cheers.

dont mean to point out the obvious, but continual knocking is gonne be something rotating (obviously) not the exhaust hitting the floor. If its going with the speed of the car its gonne be something on the drivetrain, so wheels, driveshafts, hubs, diff etc would be the first places to look, but not necessarily whats actually knocking.

I know i've done the wheel thing before, so one to look out for. :$

i had revolution wheels and the wheel nuts were too long. the nuts were tight and the wheel seemed to be as well. after 200miles i notice a slight noise so ignored it. then in traffic on the M40 the noise got quite bad, i pulled into some roadwork and found the problem!

I had an annoying cv problem, it would make the noise while pushing the car forward or back on a bit of lock, ended up being an inner cv

right, just been out playing with it.

It's deffo NOT the main part of the exhaust, it's clear of everything.
the downpipe does come very close to the inner pot joint, so it may be that, but i dont think so.

a knackered exhaust mount at the back, which had snapped, wasn't tight, and was swinging about. I dont know if it was enough to be making a knocking noise though, as it weighs feck all.

The other worrying bit, was that one of the castle nuts wasnt tight! it was on, and with the split pin in, but the disc / wheel could move about 0.5 mm back and forth, and wobbled. obviously when the car was on teh ground, you couldnt tell.

luckily, i have lent my hooge socket to a mate, and he has moved to oxford with it, so I cant fix it tonight.. unless ric has one :(

Again, I'm not sure that it will cure my knocking, but at least its something which would have caused an issue which should be fixed soon.

I'll let you know later if i manage to black a socket, and if it fixes it.
