I never thought me car was running spot on over the weekend it just didn't feel sharp at the top end.
anyway on the last run on Sunday as I came off the track it ran not a smoothly as normal, and sounded like a scooby, the signs were I thought a bent valve.

Back at camp site hoggy gave me his comp tester to use, and the test was fine all 4 cylinders were with in a bit. So feeling very tied and shtiy by now I thought it best to make a break for home.

I've now got round to looking at it, and what I saw when I lifted the rocker cover off was a great relief. The adjustment nut on the number 4 ex rocker was neatly sitting on the head with the adjustment screw wound right up. Now this would explain the tappet noise I was hearing before I ran. At the time I thought it was funny how it went as I wasn't running more then normal, so all should have been well. A bit peed as i might have made the very high 13s again and more importanly made the 110 term speed over the line that i was looking for.

so there you have it quite lucky really in some ways, unlucky in others. at least it's not another big bill.

Yes nic cheers, not sure the times would have improved much, as me 60 ft times are no good, but i'm sure it would have helpped the top speed.

Glad to hear the nut didn't go anywhere and make a mess, an easy fix for once on a Mini engine!

yes iain i was sure mine was tight to. i think it also happended to hoggy as well. so the question is, a torque figure might be helpful to go over them and check them once adjusted.

what rockers are you using?

my 1.5's have k-nuts, those oval profiled locking nuts, however it appears after several tightenings they may loe theyre locking ability and work loose

yeah k nuts technically are a one use item, but if your a cheap skate you can tighten them up very carefully in a vice.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

what about geting hold of some split nuts

the ones with thin slit on the top 180 deg form each other these dont go loose and they are re usable should cost all of 2 quid!

anyway mat, easy fix

i would strongley concider thes nuts

Yes I know the ones you mean Ben, also known as Binx nuts to some people I believe?

I think Matt that the problem is not down to not torquing them tight enough, more to do with the vibration they see, maybe a shakeproof washer under the nut might help?
