yep, the cad i use will give you the weight for various materials.

I think 1kg is achievable, the one i posted above is a shade over a kilo, but its the larger AP type.

I was more thinking of a safety point of view so we don't have to have any cast parts of the flywheel.

i just realized i had not updated this thread with these results ,it grips well at this level ,with no cooling air in the ic

..at the track ,it slipped completely in 3rd gear after a fast gear change ,,i estimate around 200 lb/ft at the slipping point ,which works out about right for a .27 uf friction coeff. with a ap rally plate i think itll be fine to around 245 lbs .ft maybe a bit more :).

Bumping this as I have a similar issue...well in terms of design, and clutch "specialists" seem totally useless.

My pressure plate uses rivets, and the heads of a couple have started to bend upwards. It's been like that for a while and hasnt seemed to get worse. But clearly it needs resolved. Design is the same.

So are the rivets made of anything special ? Will HT caps be as strong, or stronger ? Where the fixings you guys used custom, or off the shelf ?
Generally speaking, these mostly only see tension loadings and a little bending ?
So cap screws may even be much stronger ?
Did you tap the cover, or use nuts to secure ? I appear to have plenty of room to use this method of repair.

yes steve, just tapped the body, the std rivets were fairly soft, similar to normal bolts at a guess, i think whacking some car heads in yours should do the trick.

realised again ,that i hadnt updated this ,heres my dyno run ,pk boost 21 psi at pk power ,rest of run down to 17 psi . there are 2 runs on here , one is 19 psi and i got the choke out fast enough ,the other is one where i got the choke out too late ,so it reads lower on the 1st half of the graph .this one also had the side pipe on ,which was worth about 12 to 20 bhp .

NO SLIP, this was with an ap rally plate , which also meant it gripped on the track .

NOTE..
this graph has been adjusted for chris's latest calibration figures for his rollling rd , so its dropped from 261 bhp to 249bhp .

I use Unbrako shoulder screws, hardened steel washers, tapped the cover and fitted locking nuts.

Looking at it...

it seems the big round head is 18mm diameter. The smooth body where it passes through must be 9mm. That is the gap it has to pass through.

Unsure of actual height yet, as havent removed a rivet yet.

So I think M8x1.0mm with a peened style locking nut on the bottom ?

That should allow it do bolt down tight to a dead end at the 9mm, even if it is only a small step to the M8 thread ?

Ive a contact who can make me some custom bolts to exact dimensions.
Although those shoulder screws look more than ideal if they came in the correct dimensions. I think I'd prefer not to have to use a lot of washers ? Although guess it shouldnt cause any problems ?

What other ways did you have in mind ? I'm open to all suggestions that dont cost a fortune !
Where did you source the bolts from ? That unbrake website direct ?

Both Helix and Superclutch basically said they could do nothing. That I found unbelievable.

This clutch is from Australia. I'm trying to avoid any international parts or postage unless it is absolutely necessary.


I just spoke to the supplier there, and he's happy enough with the bolt repair option. Or he can send me new rivets. TBH I think the bolt repair will be a stronger job, given the original rivets have bent.

As for the friction disc that has rotated on it's rivets. I need to drill them out and see if there is any damaged to the holes.
I can get that riveted locally though. Or if I'm not happy that it can be riveted he'll send me out a new disc. Only 1 disc of the 3 has moved.

All in all, I think I'll come out of it without costing a huge sum of money. Just trying to hunt down some M8x1.0mm locking nuts or K-nuts.

Given the relatively thin metal, I think I am correct to opt for a fine thread when tapping ? I can find normal M8x1.0mm nuts ok. At a push, can use those with a locking compound, but would prefer an interference nut

i think, if you can steve , i'd put a nut on the bolt ,then thread it through ,then a nut on the other side ,so it doesnt tilt .

yes an unbrako wil be far stronger than the rivet .i have around .5.. play on the shank to the diaphragm spring sides ,and its been fine . i prefer to have a bit of play and let the cone spring centre itself .

Ok Robert, so I read all 12 pages, and it might appear that you don't really know what springs you are using, you just bloody built it with what you had to hand lol.

Im not so sure all this 'turbo' and 'mg' or '1275' and '998' or the thickness comparisons are relevant between the different clutches, since the AP springs are a larger diameter with a larger lever ratio.

I've built it, I just need to use it and see how it copes*happy*

AND WHATS MORE TWO SPRINGS OF THE SAME TYPE AND SAME THICKNESS CAN HAVE DIFFERENT PRESSURES .COS I MEASURED SOME .V WEIRD .

still, since it looks like I am the only numbnuts to be using the AP clutch, figures a little useless to me for an idea of what I have built, and at this time, i don't have the gear to measure pressures.

I had thought about making a fixture and an adapter to mount the selected clutch combination, then with my big 600lbft torque wrench measure the actual slip torque of a fully assembled clutch.
