as far as the problem with not being able to get into any other forum than this one, i am unsure, it could be a browser setting, or a firewall problem. The laptop issue, you may find you have a faulty laptop, where exactly is the heat coming from???

Possibly one for AlexB?
Does the forum use any additional code that may be stopped by corporate firewalls?

As for Nics problem that is definately down to extreme quantities of porn *tongue*
Could be the heat, could be that the drive needs defragmenting, could be that the drive is getting full and has past its maximum efficiency point.
It is not recommended to allow a Hard Disk to get over 85% full. After this point system performance will degrade.
Could even be a faulty component somewhere.
Heat has an effect where processors will back off the processing power when they get too hot.
Performance aught to come back if the temp drops sufficiently.
Hard drive might even be on its way out.
Operating System may benefit from a re-install.
As you can tell Nic it's not an exact science.
Certainly difficult to tell without seeing the machine.
Sorry I can't be of more assistance!

Regards

Dave

sorry for the hi jack gav

Right im a dell inspirion 6000, i defragged the other day, and ive only used about 9gb of my hard drive (total size 34.4gb) according to my computer

ill attempt to pop the thing open and have a look where the heat is coming from

i presummed the thing slowed down when it was getting hot, but it gets sooooo hot it makes me feel uncomfortable when its on my lap!!!

cheers for the assistance

Does it not have a fan in Nic? When my Toshiba starts getting warm (usually from doing a lot of processing) it runs a fan faster to cool itself down.

Is it an intel CPU by any chance?

Sounds like cpu throttling to me mate.

When the processor starts to overheat it reduces the speed that it operates at to reduce damage. Its dead hot obviously, maybe the poor thing cant keep itself cool in this weather.

Hi, I had a dell inspirion with the same problem, try carefulle breaking the cover in front of the screen off, then loosen the small screws holding the keyboard in place, push it against the screen and lift up, then disconnect the plug for the wires to the keyboard, loosen one more screw underneath the keyboard and remove an aluminium plate, then you can see the fan, loosen the fan and carefully clean the cooling ribs around it, I guess there is 1 ton of dust inside it, its a known problem with the type of computer. A man at the helpdesk showed me how to do this the first time. I cleaned mine at least 4 times a year as it was needed this often!

I don't understand. You say you can't get on, but clearly you can. What's it say and what does it do to make you think you can't get on?

Before you take the screwdriver to your laptop you could also try to blow compressed air into where the fan is, helped me out on my Dell one. Another thing to do if you feel up to, if you are already opening up the laptop, is to check whether the heat conducting paste between the processor and heatsink is doing its stuff. I´ve seen laptops where this has totally evaporated and the thing got so hot it shut down!

This is quite a usefull application as well, gives you the temp´s and load of various bits and bobs inside your machine, we monitor our cars firmly why not the computers as well *wink*

Gav is it not letting you login? Or you cannot see the forums full stop? If it the former then chances are at work they have disabled cookies so you will be returned to the login screen. If this is the case (and you use internet explorer) then click on

Tools > Internet Options > Privicy

You should not have a slide bar in front of you adjust it to medium. If this is not possible then your IT department have locked your computer down.

If its the latter and you cannot even browse the forum then, I dont have a clue sorry. :(

Oh and your IT department might not like you changing your browser settings by the way, which could / could not land you in a bit of bother.

exactly. having it on your lap will probably block the air vents that are usually on the underside thats why they have large rubber feet. stick it on a tray or something if you want it on your lap.

imho "laptop" is a misleading name, they were never intended to be placed on a lap hence why most manufacturers call them "notebooks" instead.

some notebooks run hot, my Dell Latitude runs so hot on occasions that i cannot touch the underside. this weather doesnt help.
