I know metro's and late minis had the late type starter motor, (with the solenoid built in). Different motors have the solenoid in different places on the out side of the starter, does anyone know which cars have which starters??

Metro starters have the solenoid pointing away from the block e.g. towards the front of the car. These don't fit well in minis as they foul the grille.

jim i have a good mini one you can have thanks wolfie, but I have the wrong ring gear for an early starter motor. Thanks for the pics and advice guys, looks like I've got to dig deep, I'm skint at the moment so it will have to wait a while. Iain, I have been looking at brise one, as there is one on my mates miglia, but I think the solenoid on his is on top and that will hit my TPS. The one dave should me the one will be ideal, as I can put it exactly where I like On 15th May, 2009 TurboDave said:

Ive just had a look on the Brise site, the position of the solenoid is much better, gives a lot more clearance at the front. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fusion-Fabri..._homepage_panel

There are many guys on the minimania site running these and I've heard of nothing but praise - certainly no stories like you've experienced? Yes that all checked out fine the problem was that the starter motor did not actually mesh properly with the ring gear and the base plate was machined on one side and built up with weld on the other to make it work so that it moved the whole lot inwards. A mate at work has a Lancia Montecarlo and needed a bespoke starter motor. I told him not to touch cambridge motorsport with a bargepole but ignored me . Result six months of making a starter motor and when it finally arrives - does not fit!!! On 5th Sep, 2011 Vegard said:

Does anyone know if Is there are any other manufacturers that make starters with the same solenoid position? Website is out of date the solenoid is integral with the gearbox and motor body with the result that the whole assembly is about the same as an inertia type motor and is a lot better for accomodating intercoolers and front rads. Can't give you a pic as it is fitted to my car! On 5th Sep, 2011 Vegard said:

I have never known anyone bother balancing a flywheel after changing a ring gear. As in effect the ring gear itself is inherently in balance anyway, and so should not affect the flywheel.

I thought about getting a new ring gear to suit the inertia type starter, as it was just a case of grinding one off welding the new one on, until Wes pointed out about balancing the flywheel after, seems alot of effort and probably would end up costing about the same! If some one could post a pic of the new style brise starter fitted it help alot. ![]() Give them a ring and ask them - I bought mine about 18 months ago and they did me a good deal but I did go there in person.... There £185 + the dreaded VAT! I think i'll go for the changing the ring gear route! For anyone that wants to save some weight they only weigh 2.5kg, which has got to be a fair bit lighter than the standard jobby. That's about what it started at but didn't pay anything like that - need to try and haggle better.............. On 5th Sep, 2011 Vegard said:
