hey all,

I get a funny feeling that the engine is running out of fuel/stavation when at full revs around 7000 to 7500 in 3rd gear at about 15psi it seems to slow down all of a sudden and but in 2nd gear same revs it keeps pulling to 8k.

fuel pressure at idel is set to 4psi and the pump can put out over 30psi but maybe the engine is using up the fuel in the float and the the flow is being restricted by the needle and seat causing stavation.

any one heard of this before?

thanks Grant

My car used to do it, but it was because my pump wouldn't pump the volume of fuel needed.

My pump was pumping around 0.5 litres/minute, it really needs over 1 litre/minute.

I know of a Maestro turbo that has run at 20 psi with the standard SU HIF float bowl, needle valve, and fuel pump. It has no fuelling problems. Are you sure that it isn't a case of your pump not being up to the job, rather than the flow being restricted?

The facet red top runs at a maximum 7psi, IIRC. You need fuel pressure to be around 4 psi above boost, and I suspect that the pump isn't able to do this for you. The boost pressure in the float bowl will over come the fuel pressure, and the float bowl will begin to empty until you lift off or change gear.

The Bosch fuel pump that was fitted to the Metro, Maestro, and Montego is capable of over 40psi. It was fitted to all sorts of fuel injected cars, and it is still manufactured by Bosch.
