Help?....

Im having alot of problems at the moment,
Have just fitted an intercooler last week and have plumbed all the piping around engine from turbo to the carb.
Have fitted and after market waste gate too.
Other mods i did was the David Vizard mod to the block and have the heater return pipe plumbed into the top tank of the radiator.

I drove it home from the workshop tonight...but didnt get far when the needle on temperature guage kept climbing and climbing.
I imediately stopped and could smell something burning....was the carpet inside the car nearest the bulkhead.
I popped the bonnet and the turbo was glowing red ! i am freaking out as it has already been rebuilt twice and its not cheap.
The engine seemed just as hot too....lost heaps of water....to evaporation.
Could it be something to do with airflow inside the pipes and intercooler?
Pipes are all 2inch steel and Intercooler is large enough, off a turbo toyota previa van.
Doesnt seem to make a difference weather on boost or off boost either.
I really dont know what to do apart from take it all off and put back to standard setup and see what happens.

Has anyone experienced a problem like this before?

Due to you adding an intercooler there is now a chance that this is causing the engine to run lean, with the result that the exhaust temperatures are higher.

You need to get it setup properly on the rolling road. It could also be your ignition timing is too retarded that is causing this problem.

What sort of ventilation do you use to get air into the bonnet?

Also do you use Exhause wrap around the manifold?

I'd be checking the ignition timing personally. Chances are it's heavily retarded.

Thanks guys for your answers.

I feel beter now it is only because of running lean....which i believe it is, did backfire alot. Have richened it up and advanced it alittle and seems beter although dont dare drive it now.

It is booked in to be dyno tuned of tuesday actually....i was freaking out because i thought i had done some serious damage before it was due to be looked at ! Have checked compression and turbo and seems like i have come off lucky. Only need to change the exhaust leaking manifold gasket. Will change the oil too as a matter of course
Only Tuesday will tell for sure tho.

I dont run any air scoops in my bonnet, am trying to keep to the standard appearance. I would put one in however if it is reckoned that it is absolutley nessary. ?
Havent got any exhaust wrap on turbo either, i heard it keeps the heat in the engine bay down so i will look at putting some on at some stage soon.

Thanks Again, Jeremy
