Yes its a straight cut box, that is about all you can tell from a picture like that, and really all you could tell with it in front of you until you tool it to pieces.

It doe's look pretty clean inside though, but thats not a teribly good guide to condition.

I think it's of a A series not A+ due to the studs on the side, so will be the smaller idler bearing 1/2 " as opposed to 3/4"

Also looks to have a 4 bolt mainshaft bearing retainer, which isn't great.

The 4th bolt drilling (arrowed in pic below) is very close to the top of the alloy casing, quite often these casings will crack from that uppermost bolt drilling to the top of the casing, or even sometimes through to the bearing counterbore.

The later gearbox casings do not have this hole drilled, and just use 3 bolts to secure the bearing retainer collar.

Is this no good for the A+ engine then? whats the impact of the smaller idler bearing?

could this gear set go into a A+ later casting box?

sorry if these are stupid questions.. learning about the gearboxes as i go.

yeah that looks like the weaker casing that quite a few peeps advised me not to use, but its not a real problem to swop to a different casing.

but if you were to buy this then you would need to strip it check everying replace minimum all the bearings, possibly syncros and possibly more.

what could be a problem is any of the gears are broken and you dont know what make they are how will you going to get replacements.

but if its very cheap then id buy it if its not cheap then id personnally stay clear unless the guy selling it will guarentee its ok

imo

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

It is not so much if the gears are chipped (fairly obvious to see) but if the syncro faces of the gears are worn away (need to strip to see) as this entails new gears (a JKD 2nd gear used to be about 60quid). What make is the gearset if JKD you'll never get bits for it as JKD had nowt on the shelf when I rang up a couple of weeks ago despite the massive online Mini catalogue on their site.
