Getting ready for an MOT after a long rebuild project, but am having problems with smoke. The engine starts ok and there is no smoke at low revs or when it is just started. Problem only seems to be at around 3-4000rpm when it starts to get smokey. I have taken the head off to have alook at things.
Inlet valves and ports look clean enough with no evidence of oil but the exhaust valves and ports are covered in black oily coating. The top of the pistons are also oily, although when I spin the engine there is little or no oil being left on bores.
The inlet from the Turbo to carb seems clean enough so I don't think there is a problem with turbo oil seals.
Any thoughts???
(also notice that there are only valve stem seals fitted to the inlet valves. Is this normal?)

Thanks.

turbos smoke when the seals leak into the exhaust turbine side, not necissaraly into the compressor side.

Piston rings and valve stem seals are the most common culprets for oil consumption problems in the engine. A compression test, but even better, a leak down test should be carried out to find out the condition of the engine.

You did replace the valve stems seal when you had the head off??

I am not aware of there being a seal for the larger stem of the turbo's exhaust valve. I may be wrong, im sure some one will correct me. Some NA engines have only seals on the inlets, but others have them on all valves.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

If I strip the head down then I'll replace the seals/guides etc, but at the moment I'm not sure if I need to go down that route. Suppose I'm just hoping someone will come up with something that does not require me to strip down the engine and renew the rings!!! (wishful thinking)

No seals on ex valves,If you jack the front of the car up and it stops it's the valve seals(or raise the back and it gets worse)

Had the front of the car up on the ramps and it made no difference. No smoke at initial start-up either.
