The transfer case in my truck has developed a leak - and on closer inspection It's got a hairline crack next to the tapered drain-plug that someone at some time has obviously over-tightened... It's certainly not happened whilst I've been owener - I know because I've never checked it (LOL) but anyway - it's cracked and started dribbling.

I was just thinking that "well, it's ally - so when i get my tig I'll drain the oil, and weld the crack up"... But speaking with someone this evening, he suggested it could be Magnesium - this is sometimes used in transfer cases it seems.

Thinking about it - it's definately 'cleaner' than the gearbox casing which is an aluminium and caked in typical aluminium corrosion; the transfer case I just assumed to be a die-cast ally...

So- how do I easilly tell the difference??? Anyone?

Mag ally is a lighter grey than ally, corodes and deteriorates more as well. LOL, its also lighter by weight. it bends better than ally, hit it with a hammer, if it breaks then its ally if it bends then its mag

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Then why do they use mag wheels in rallying??? Youll finish the stage on a mag rim but youll never on an ally rim!

Is it a ford F or a GM?

It's a 1995 F-150... the trans is a ZF, the transfer case a BorgWarner - so no ford bits...

Nah, what you want for this job Dave is a big gob of plastic padding.....*wink*

More seriously though Carl has a good point, even the tiniest trace of oil and you'd end up with a big mess.......

We have welded mag gearbox casings on our Arrows at work before. The bloke we had do it said it was a bugger to do but it saved us an awful lot of money on getting a new one cast up as they all used hewland internals but custom casings! £££££

Having said that i bet by the time you got all setup it would have been cheaper to buy a new one!!!
