Got a set of Valve Guides from Minispares and started fitting them. After fitting one inlet and one exhaust, I decided to try the valves in them for fit. The inlets fit ok but the exhaust valves won't fit. Should the exhaust guides be a different size???

you need to ream the inside of the guides to the correct size for the valves to fit :)

If they are too tight a fit,due to the valves expanding when hot, they will stick a bit in the guides and get twotted by the pistons

Best get them right

Are you trying to fit turbo exhaust valves into a NA exhaust valve guide? Were all the guides the same size?

You can buy valve guides for the turbo valves, the valves should go straight in, either that or they are cheepo parts.

I asked my machinist about this reaming of the guides, and he said 'Not at all'. I trust him, when he builds aston martin and ferrari engines, why shouldnt I.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

All the guides supplied were the same size. There did not seem to be an option for buying larger guides for the exhaust valves. I assumed the valve stems were all the same diameter.
If they require reaming, can this be done by hand or does this need to carried out at a machine shop??

Thanks for the replies guys. I have looked again on the Minispares site and found the correct guides.

I think Hoggy can supply reamers, all the guides will need reaming to debur them after the fitting process.

all bronze guides will need reaming out after fitting as the bronze swll inwards a tad after fitting.
turbo exhaust guides require a adjustiable reamer as you cant buy one the right size if you are fitting bronze guides for turbo exhaust valves.

but the main thinking on here is to bin the valves and use normal race exh valves instead which is a lot less hassel

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas
