At the weekend we had a few head gasket failures. It turns out that the one of the brass inserts in the head had recessed causing the fire ring to fail prematurely.

I'd use a threaded bung too, did this to my block to all the holes before fitting my 16v head On 15th May, 2009 TurboDave said:

Ok after inspection the insert is/was a really poor fit (it basically just fell out.

you should be able to get away without a skim. wind the threaded bund in untill it stops, then measure how much it's sticking out, remove it, shorten it and then wind it back in, just get in 1mm below the head face. On 15th May, 2009 TurboDave said:
