At the weekend we had a few head gasket failures. It turns out that the one of the brass inserts in the head had recessed causing the fire ring to fail prematurely.

I assume that any competent machine shop should be able to refit this and put a skim on the head.

Any advice?

I had this,

It was recomended to me to put in a threaded plug, but this left a gap so i tapered the hole in the head with a cone cutter (7 degrees) and made a brass plug to fit, bitof lcktite, press it in and a light skim, bobs your uncle.

I'd use a threaded bung too, did this to my block to all the holes before fitting my 16v head

Ok after inspection the insert is/was a really poor fit (it basically just fell out.

Now, the insert in question is near No. 1 cyinder and has a hole in it. As it happens the corresponding water hole in the block is not lined up with the head gasket (998 block and BK450). So I thought I might just block both up.

What do people think?

Cheers

you should be able to get away without a skim. wind the threaded bund in untill it stops, then measure how much it's sticking out, remove it, shorten it and then wind it back in, just get in 1mm below the head face.
