As title. I am seriously considering an Audi A4 Avant.

Just wondering if anyone has much experience of these cars or owns one? And has any pointers and things to look out for when looking at cars to buy?

Cheers..........

The front suspension arms are a problem, but they are fairly easy to change. Also, the cam belts are EXPENSIVE to change on the 2,6 and 2,4 ( if it exists) petrol engines.

Get a variant of the 1.9 tdi engines, preferably the 130. A load of guys here have them as company cars, they're really nice. Comfy, fit tons of stuff in, go well for diesels and great tow cars.

A friend has one and has had lots of front suspension problems resulting in all the arms being changed a couple of times. She doesn't like it as much as her Audi 80 and she is looking to get rid as soon as she can.

Both her and my neighbour who also has one have commented that there isn't much room for rear passengers and boot space is poor for the size of the car.

Brother-in-law has a 2.5 diesel. He loves it and it's great for towing his huge caravan. I took them to the airport in it, and came home the long way. Didn't take me long to get home :)

What neil's just said is typical of a4's as far as i can see, the newer ones seem to be better in that respect. Certainly wasnt impressed with the one my dad tried out a few years back, infact he went for the rover over the a4..

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Cheers guys, I already knew about the rear passenger space not being that great, but seeing as I'll be driving sod rear passengers!

I am looking at buying a 2.5 TDi quattro, the logic being that hopefully it will be swift enough to not piss me off as my only road car, but be able to tow trailers about happily etc.....

At present I run 2 road cars and am getting fed up with that, so looking to get one of these to do everything....

Well the one I was strongly considering buying and was off to look at tomorrow has turned out to be a Cat B write off and so should not be on the road. I knew it had been damaged and repaired but I am bloody glad I phoned my mate up to HPI check it for me.........a lucky escape! However the search will continue for one!

I've had an A4 1.9tdi for the last 4 years and its been a great car, its 11 years old and drives like new. I would test drive the tdi 130bhp as they really have got some grunt for oil burners. If you go for the 2.5 you wont be dissapointed with the performance!

I've just driven a brand spanking new Hartge modified BMW 330XD with 271 hp and 600Nm Torque. Fuck me, that's all I say! That could tow a lorry!

Just picked up my A4 last wednesday, got to say i'm really impressed with it, it's not an avant and is only a 2.0 TDI, but i did opt for the 170 version. Nice and quick and feels really solid.

Tom, what is the official towing capacity (on the plate under the bonnet). My '98 Passat Estate has something like 1530Kg for a braked trailer which is just enough for my trailer's capacity.

I have lugged more than 2 tonnes with it (off the highway of course) but just wondering what the actual rating is.

Just curious as this is the main reason I can not replace the Passat with anything other than a Passat or A6 (I do think the quattros have a higher rating though ...)

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...
