I've just got the engine running again after fitting the new clutch seal.

While it was on stands I thought I would fit the new gear selector roll pin. The original had snapped in two pieces.

Anyway, the two roll pins I got from MS the other day seems too big. They measure approx 1/4" OD.

The old one is 7/32" OD.

Are they supposed to roll tighter as you fit them, because they do not want to fit in the hole even after tapering them.

Can someone confirm the diameter before I have a rant at MS.

New pins are always tight, yes they should close up a bit as you drive them in. 1/4" does sound a little large though, but unfortunately I do not have one here to measure for you.

The other annoying thing is that I bought a roll pin from a stall at MITP the other week. That one turned out to be too small - 5mm OD.

How come the simplist part of a mini can be so difficult for the suppliers to provide?

1/4" feels too large to me aswell...

7/32 (5.5mm) has to be the correct size at a guess.

I hate those little buggers,

I can never get them out , i guess i just don't have the knack. I've resorted to a bolt setup in mine.

Mini13,

What size bolt do you use?

I've got some 5mm but they are about 0.5mm too small.

Is it worth drilling out the holes to 6mm and use a 6mm bolt?

I think its just an M5 caphead with 2 nuts locked together,

there is a bit of play there, but its just my daily driver so i don't really care.

What i'd do if i had the choice is drill the gearbox spigot out so its a snug fit on an m6 an then tap one side of the sleve thing that fits over it, use a cap head and put a nylock on as well to be sure.

Which way do the roll pins come out?

E.g tap from drivers side or passenger?

I can never remember. lol

Anyone got any tips as that always seems to take forever to remove.

Put the gearbox in reverse and wollop it from the drivers side with a lump hammer and a decent punch. I use a 5mm drill flattened at the sharp end.

Once they move they sem to come out. It's the initial movement that is difficult, hence the lump hammer.

I've just ordered a box of 120 roll pins for £6.50 because it contains about 12 at 5.6mm diameter. LOL.

Overkill maybe but should get sorted.

Reverse is the way to get them out, I have a proper roll pin punch with a "tit" on the end that locates in the hollow centre of the roll pin, makes it loads easier as the punch now cannot slip from the right place, so all you have to do is wallop it.

I have a fairly old pin that is not overly tight and secure it with lock wire. Cut the wire and drifts in and out nicely.
