Can i just ask, this may be very stupid, but i build the turbo and exhaust manifold and everything like the carb and stuff up on the engine while its OUT OF THE CAR dont i? Ive only just found out by looking at jimster's site of him putting the engine in! I always wondered how you bolt on the oil pipes and things while its in the car. Sorry if this is a really silly question i didnt realise before!!!

I always put all the turbo, carb ect on once the engine is in the car. It would be an arse to put on the driveshafts and line up the engine mounts with everything on.

Also if the engine falls over you are likely to break something like the carb if it's bolted on. Putting the turbo oil return pipe on isn't easy but it's by no means impossible.

I always put the engine in with the head off as it's lighter and eaiser to move around, vital when you're skinny like me and have to do it on your own

The hardest job is fitting the down pipe clamp and getting it to seal.

If i have the choice, i always put the engine in with head, turbo and carb already on, but without the starter oil filter housing or dizzy (when i used to have one!)

If i can get my big monkey hands down the back of the block to pop the pot-joints into the diff, anyone can!

I can't get my diff pots out... so I have ended up seperating the joint itself each time so far

I've chipped the casing so its not for want of effort :p

Never found it a problem before, just on this engine!!!

I always go with it fully built up, seems easier and since ive got an engine crane weight isnt a problem.

A pit is handy for putting pot joints in!! *smiley*

Alex - have you not modified the circlips on the diff outputs then?
Easy mod and it makes them really easy to remove!

The 'rear' circlip is a standard one; the 'front one shows how the ends have been bent in slightly, and relieved slightly with a grinder to remove the sharp edges.

Hope this is obvious what i'm trying to say!

my drive shafts usually come out of the diff pots on all engines, saves on the oil spillage anyway! i have to rebuild the hub's ball joints and things when i put them back on anyway, so far ive put new trackrod ends on, changed the knackered tie rod bushes, i cant work out how to fit the flat bump stops (the ones above the top arm bracket) and ill need to do the ball joints, so ill just worry about putting the driveshafts in after the engines in. Because it will be my first time building the engine back up, im going to do it all out of the car, i have all pulleys and things to lift it anyway so weight isnt a problem, and also the head and everything are already on. The thing im dreading again is the manifold bolts, i hate doing the metro ones that you need to use spanners on, i find them really hard to judge the tightness!
