just a quicky, i brought my car of ebay as a non runner about a year and a half ago so i only have the guys word for what was done but apparently the engine was rebuilt and i have felt the shaft in the turbo and ther was no play so all was good.

Howver when ever i start the car up a huge cloud of smoke pops out the tail pipe. and if i'm going along and happens to come on boost a huge puff of smoke pops out also. this leads me to my next problem. My car has trouble making boost. i think this could be semi down to a bit of clutch slip but it doesn't make boost when at idle. My mates said my acutator was bleeding off at low revs?

any advice that can help me here would help lots thanks

You will make no boost at idle you will only make boost when you put load on the engine.

What colour is the smoke that comes out? White, blue or black?

it wants a RR setup.

Blue on startup could be valve guides, possibly a bit of turbo.

I wouldnt worry too much at all. Give it some time to bed in but get it to a good RR and you'll be amazed with the difference.

No boost when the engine is not under load (e.g. driving the car along).

Your mates are talking arse.

Just wondering, you could do what ive just done and check the spark plugs see which have oil on them, if its like one cylinder then you know its that seal or something and not the turbo

My turbo one used to have the same symptoms, and if you left it idling for more than 10 mins it would start smoking a bit grey blue too

i cured it with new stem seals

take a look on "how stuff works" or similar for turbos, wastegates, actuators etc to get a general idea of how it all works and then ask questions *smiley* trust me, they'll have a lot clearer pictures/definitions than we can type here *smiley*

The actuator should only bleed off (ie open waste gate) at a certain psi level. There is no (direct) relation with rpm. Definalelty not on low rpms --> low rpm (an low load) means no turbo pressure, so the actuator should definately not beeld off any exhaust gasses.

Your friends are probably thinking of a dump valve, which dumps the turbo pressure into the air when you lift of the throttle (not rpm related as well). It does so in order to keep the turbo spinning as fast as possible in the given situation --> by dumping the turbo pressure into the air the acuator "thinks" that the turbo needs more exaust gasses and will not (fully) open the waste gate --> turbo remains spinning faster --> less turbo lag when flooring the throttle again.
