Hi,

As far as playing with 3D Ignition Maps goes, what sort of spec laptop is up to the job?

I was thinking of just picking up a cheapy off Ebay, but didn't know what I would need?

Cheers, Tim *smiley*

Anything will do from the last 5-6 years. Make sure it has a serial port. The USB adapters are a pain in the arse.

Daft question, but do I actually need a laptop if I am taking it to a rolling road for mapping?

I'm hoping just to get it set up for 2 different boost settings.

Tim

Yes you will need a laptop, it is unlikely the RR operator will have a laptop with the correst version of software (unless you are using Emerald and going to Dave Walkers RR, or something similar)

Anything running windown 95 and above will be fine.

Sorry but most of the software that is around for download for systems will not entertain anything that old. I am using 2000 for DTA but could really do with XP. It is unlikely that any laptop with Win95 on it will have a battery that still works and will need mains power all the time which is a right pain in the paddock and a replacement battery will write off the lap top in terms of cost.

I think it depends on the ECU, DTA/Emerald/Omex probably need an upto date system, but MegaJolt/Squirt will run fine on an ancient 95 system.

I know what you are saying regarding battery life but a cheap 12v-mains inverter sorts this problem out.

Got one Maplins £30 - as had a shag nasty lappy (Compaq)with no battery - nothing but a pain died eventually. Bought a T22 s/h for £250 with two batteries which I keep/charging/ discharging. Much better for paddock use. In the workshop I have a PC and a long lead on the pot box.

I'm using a Pentium 2 based IBM Thinkpad.

Was 60 quid off ebay, good battery and running Win98SE which is a good operating system for the older machines.

Runs Megatune like a rocket, and I know IBM laptops are very tough.

The PCMCIA to serial cards work a treat though.
