I'm picking up a freshly bored 1380 A series 1300GT block with crank and GT rods on payday.

I know i need to use the A series crank to have it offset ground so i can make it long stroke, but what rods do i have to use? will the GT ones do it or do i need different ones?

If its gonna sting me mega bucks for special rods then i'll just stick with a 1380 but if i can go to 1430 easily then i'll give it a bash.

Cooper S rods, as the offset grind takes the journals down to the smaller cooper S size.

Incidently, the piston to deck hight is the same a it would be for standard as there is no difference at TDC, the extra stroke is at BDC

that wouild be a clever trick, to move the crank down in the block, which is what you would have to do ,lol

awe hell *blush* , never realy thought about it till you lot pointed out id made a dick of me self.

Read it some where and you know what, im sure it was Minifinity. DOH! should have known better *frown* , sill i was right in part, LOL, the piston sits further down the bore at BDC by 1.5mm or there abouts.

And yes it is of course true that the piston sits by 1.5mm or there abouts higher in the bore at TDC. ( You have taken that into consideration have you Bud?)

Off to find a dark corrner in a room wearing a black pointy hat.

i presume you mean S rods? A few of the bigger breakers organisations sell them for about £150-200 a set? You do have to be carefull though as you'll never know what they'll have done in the past. Never ever buy modified ones, ever.

Omega still do cast short deck height pistons with a dish, looking at about £220ish for them (i dont have a curent price, talk to MED). I dont think Mega do short deck height ones anymore, i know they used to though.

are you going for the 73.5mm pistons ? i think sprite rods can be used too. iam sure i had sprite rods on my 1430. you will need to modify your gearbox by way of die grinding some of the casting back slightly, or the end caps will strike them *wink*

yes i did mean S rods not pistons andeh..ooops.

I've had a look on MED's site and the cast omega's are £260 a set now which is what i was looking at spending on some 73.5mm pistons anyway, be it for 1380 or a stroker.

MFT now you come to mention it i'm sure i heard somewhere that sprite or maybe midget rods were the same as the S ones, not 100% sure though as i think i read it on TMF...

The 1275 Midgets had the same size crank journels as the Cooper S (1 5/8 Inch), also you can buy an entire midget engine for less than a set of S rods on the bay.

the rods themselves are very very strong, i used em for rally x and they were ok :) even nicer if you get em lightened and balanced.
iam using a set on a second build again i will be going the 73.5mm pistons and stroked crank, but may splash out on a billett jobby :) (this is way in the future of course)

Bud, if you do by a complete Midget Engine, I might be interested in the block & crank, as I need to rebuild the engine in mine at some point and it's always nice to have a choice of blocks & cranks.

Not all Spridgets did have the 1,625" rods though.

right, i've got a set of AEG625's here that i picked up at the weekend, from a rough eyeing up they're the same length as A+ rods but with the smaller journal, so i guess these are the ones to use?

I've also been offered a set of AEG521's, anyone know if these are the same? apparently the chap says they are roughly 41mm/1.6" journal size, but i dont know if thats with the bearing in or without until he replies.

what sort of price ? the 625`s are the smaller journal size *wink* i have one in my hand right now woopee doo :) shame i only have 3 of em though :( welll 3 and a half. i have also found a full set of 12g1507/8 rods which have been worked. never heard of these ones. since we are on the subject of rods.

Bud if for any reason you choose not to use the 625`s i would be interested in tehm to complete me set. that along with Vegards help finding me a piston :)

cheers dude, i'll see what happens when i get these AEG521's and see what they look like. al i've been able to find when i google the code is that they're cooper s rods, even though this chap says they're from a spridget.

I may have a lead on some more 625's though, keep getting people mailing me about em after i placed one wanted ad on a spridget website. I'll point em in your direction if any more turn up dude.
The best bit is the price though, paid £40 for me 625's and should be getting the 521's for the same hopefully.

The 12G1507 is the standard A 1275 rod. 1,75" journal btw.

625= Spridget, and are of a inferior quality than the 521 which are Cooper S ones. However, the 625 are made of the same material as the A rods, EN18, which is superior to the A+ rods. This means that hte 625 rods will survive anything you throw at them. They're stronger than what most turboguys are using.
