Hi all,

Just ben out in my mini 1293cc turbo, When i start it up from cold or warm it takes a while to fire up and once running when i try to pull away it chugs and then cuts out! It is worst when its warm or when its been idling for 5 - 10 minutes, Could this be the sparkplugs or leads? The fuel pressure is set at 3.5psi.

Thanks Matt

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

it could be one thing or a number of faults

go through the things you mentioned also coil, ignition module, then to the carb loose pipes etc..... keep us posted!

Mine did this when there was a air leak, im not sure if it was a hose or a gasket (plenum) but when i replaced and refitted them all it was ok, i think when it was getting warmer things were expanding and the air was leaking more

just trial and error it to see if anything helps like benross says

ahh ok il try all of those thanks, Changed all the fuel pipes going to the carb in the engine bay as there was a fuel leak so hopefully its not those, one thing tho are all of the pipes that go to the carb 8mm i/d because i changed one of the pipes but it was very loose think it should be 6mm would this be right?

Sorry for all the questions

just changed the sparkplugs the ones that came out were sooty black, put new ones in and its still doing the same, im thinking it could be something to do with fueling cos black smoke comes out when you accelerate after you restart the engine, any ideas?

Cheers matt

Mine ran rough. and took a while to start when my manifold gasket went, easy thing to check!

black soot on the plugs suggests its running rich.

Is this the first time you've driven it? ie after rebuild. Or ist it a problem thats got worse over time?

nope its done about 400miles since rebuild, Used the search button and have found similar symptoms to mine that suggest it's running rich, Changed the coil last night seems a little better, It has always had trouble starting when warm but has never cut out this has only just started happening. Have checked compression this is ok.

Cheers matt,

go for the valve clearences

then aim to the carb needle loose or the float bowl valve suspect!

these are only inspired guesses

take it to a rolling road and get it sorted propertly. if the guy knows what hes talking about and sorts it properly it will run like a dream. had loads of people come to set up my brothers na 1400 but no1 could do it. took it to a local rolling raod, the old guy who runs it loved to see and old mini. he ordered custom carb needles and set it up to run like a dream and got nearly 120 bhp on the rollers. its not a cheap alterantive bit its worth it to get ur car running deccent.
