Hey guys, my sis has a renault clio that she drives regularly. Yesterday she told me it was making a really odd noise, so i took it for a drive and after a little while came a strange whurring/rubbing type noise from the front end.

It can sometimes be felt through the steering wheel, its not constant however but once it starts to make the noise it carrys on for a while and dissapears randomly.

Say if you where moving along at 30 it would be whurring along and you came up to a junction, as the rotation of he wheel slows down so does this "whur" into a small series of "whurs" lol until you come to a stop. You then pull away and as soon as you dip the clutch it makes another sharp whurring noise and the noise appears and re appears randomly.

The noise isnt affected by braking or steering. And on the motorway it dissapears, as soon as you go up or down a slip roads the noise re-appears.

Ive got a feeling its probably a wheel bearing or cv joint or something. Do you guys have any ideas what it might be? It would be much appreciated!

Swindon

If the steering wheel starts wobbling, under power or free wheeling-even when slow it will be the cv joint.

Hmm well it doesnt wobble under power or free wheeling, it doesnt wobble at all! You can just feel slight vibrations while its making the noise, not all the time though!

Nope no power steering on it! Just a bog standard mk2 clio*oh well*

Could it be the brake caliper pistons sticking could it? Im not sure it would be as the noise isnt affected my brakeing i just have no idea what it could be.

Working up the BHP ladder.

Jack each side up and check the front wheels for free play (top and bottom), then spin them. You'll soon know if a bearing is out.
Does it also make the noise when free wheeling/coasting?

sounds like it may be garbox or release bearing related to me.

Yeah it does make the noise while free wheeling!

When my sis gets home ill jack it up and check for play on the wheels and see if theres anything else i can find.

a guy at work had a megan that was making noises, it sounded like it was at the input to the gearbox (hence my previous post)
he took my advise and px'd it.
