Ive recently advertised a car for sale on autotrader, and after a day I had a response via email offering to buy my car and asking what my best price would be.

I replied and said "come and have a look and make an offer".

The buyer was adament that he was willing to buy the car without seeing it as it as for a 'client'!! (seemed suspicious already).

I gave a price and he agreed to buy it, and he said he would send a bankers draft!

I told him i would not release the car without the B.draft clearing and for me to be able to draw off it. He seemed ok with this.

A few weeks have past and the bankers draft has arrived, but its made for £3000 more than I agreed!!! (alarm bells).

This looks like the classic Nigerian scam, where they send more money than agreed, part to pay for the car, part to cover shipping costs. Once you've signed it over, paided for delivery the payment bounces, leaving you with less money than you started with and no car!

The cheque was from some bank in Ireland, so I phoned directory enquiries to get the banks phone number to check the authentisity of the cheque, and what do you know The bank doesn't exist!!!

Im thinking of going to the police reporting fraud, but im not sure if its a good idea as there could be repercussions!

What do you recon?

Police does seem to be the best option!

Ive got all the emails saved so they may be able to track them that way?

just spoken to Police?

The woman I spoke to said she hadn't heard of this scam for ages!

She said, some people have sent cheques back paying them back for the extra money!

i thought this sounded too good to be true when u said about it the other week matt!
must be well annoying, not only have they wasted your time but ur still no closer to gettin rid of the car!

maybe its a good idea to post up his email address on here, only so others who mite be selling cars dont get caught out by him aswell *wink*

and if anyone veiwing this thread (not members of this forum of course!) decides to send him crap or sign him up for certain dodgy internet sites or weekly homosexual newsletters then thats up to them! *happy*

Dave, something tells me you've done this before! LOl

Im liking these ideas keep 'em coming.

The police said that i should NOT contact this person at all-basicallt just ignore him!

They never said I couldn't sign up to dodgy porn sites or anything. :)

his email is freconel03@graffiti.net

Goes by the name of David Smith (if your selling a car-avoid like the plague)!

I think i've caught this thread a little late, but this is a really common scam (check snopes.com)

I can't remember all the details, but the draft would probably clear if you cashed it, but a few months down the line they'd want the money back. There was a big thing about this at work a few months back.

Near Daventry, midlands

i would be reluctant on digging this if he/she has your address.... i'd be more interested in making sure the car is secure.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

The car is at a different address so, its safe.

When i spoke to the police they said that they usually have no intention of actually getting the car just to get some money out of it.

Ive managed to sign him up to every news letter and free sign up there is soo far.

Ive also got a mobile number for him , so I signed him up for a free crazy frog ringtone! :) Lol
