Well ive finally got round to starting the turbo project.

i have been stripping the engine down for a day or two now and the only problem ive got is trying to get the clutch off the crankshaft.

been using two different pullers and its had a couple of hard cracks with the hammer and it wont budge - its even bent the centre bolt on one of my pullers.

tried heating it up to no avail as well.

has anyone else had a problem like this and can anyone suggest a way to get it off as its starting to wind me up now.

I no there meant to be tight but to be honest i think the clutch has been put on wrong - it had a new clutch fitted to it just before i bought the engine/car and it was no longer releasing (the clutch pedal was stuck and had been since the clutch was fitted) could this be a reason for it being a pain in the arse to get off?

many thanks for any help

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

WELL!!! your NOT the first! *laughing* *laughing**wink*

the flywheel has Fretted on (AS it does!)

you need to apply heat!

"IN ONE PLACE ONLY"!!

(IE) in short............

1/ "put full load on with the puller"

then get get oxy acetaline bottles on say a number 5 tip and Apply the heat in... ("ONE SPOT ONLY"!!) ..... ON the Flywheel

"STAND WELL CLEAR"! and i mean it!!!

general heat all over will ..... "NOT WORK"!

if you have Not got the bottles get some!
or transport the engine and apply this advice to some one who do it for you

keep us posted!

Oh! dont forget to dress & Lap the flwheel on aftewards *wink*

Have you removed the keyed washer under the bolt before you applied the puller??

ha ha , good question tom,

imho if its fretted om that bad you may find a scrap tail on removal,
the worst iv'e had was the crank collecting material from the flywheel at 90degs to the keyway ,two big lumps built up on the tail and it took 5 puller bolts to eventually drag the flywheel over these and off .

its never happened since,[lesson learned] my cranks now stay on.

in case it makes you feel and better rhino , i ws down at the yard the other day in sweltering heat , and trying to get a f /wheel off , and i did up the puller , then some more ,then banged it to death (no not that way vegard) then did it up some more ,and then got a 2 ft lever ,and stood on it ,then snapped off the centre bolt !!!.so its still there ,with a snapped of puller on it ,waiting for me to get back with some heat . im hoping it magically pops off while im not looking at it if we get a cold night .lol

is it verto or preverto?

I find the vertos a right bastard to get off, out of the 5 ive removed, 3 had to be cut off with the gas axe. i use an S&P 10 tonne hydruallic puller too

I use short head studs in my puller one end fits verto the other preverto, not sure if they are the right thread though.
Lump hammer in the starter hole, failing that the sledgehammer..........mind that normally results in another transfer case

rite ta benross ill give that 1 a go with my oxy kit, and ill wear a hard hat to put.

tom - yep i removed the washer (i know that bit at least lol)

least someone else has had a bad experience week with clutches (sorry robert)

it is a verto clutch and your right it is a right bastard 2 get off (the preverto clutches ive removed before had been straightforward)

yeah im gonner need to replace the clutch casing (got a little bit angry last night and its a tad cracked *blush*)

will a casing from another a series engine do or will it have to be a housing from a verto style clutch?

going to give it another go tomorrow and hope for the best

many thanks for the help

3 types of casing a,a+ and turbo a and a+ differant idler gear bearing size. turbo bigger gearbox input bearing size

some 998's don't have the breather drilled through so need a bit of modding

Also you may have to re adjust the idler thrust washer thickness if you change the case

All the ones i have done recently i have used my 1/2 inch impact gun, buzz the puller bolt in and it has poped the clutch off, maybe i was just lucky!

thanks dangerous - got a few different casings in the garage so will try a couple and put on which ever one fits best

think you have been lucky with that star mag as normally it does take some work - although the shock from the impact wrench might be releasing the binding of the clutch to the crank.

thanks for the help every one and hopefully i should have the engine in the mini by the end of next week - so i will post some pics once ive got it done.
