hi all,im new here and need a bit of help *tongue* just got myself a mini and havent owned one for a few years,so have forgoten lots....when the car is idling and driving there is a grating,knocking noise from the offside engine area...the only way i can describe it is like a loose gear in a gearbox...i seem to remember this was common on minis and was the idler or drop gears??????? can anyone help :cool:

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

idler gear bearing at a guess. does it stop when you press the clutch pedal? Fairly common, needs a new bush, hopefully no damage to the crank. *smiley*

cheers iain,it doesnt stop when you press clutch but seems to get a little quieter...is it a big job to sort out?

Not something ive had to do to be honest. Im assuming its an engine in job but much easier with the engine out like most things! All depends how easy the clutch is to get off!

also, check it isnt the timing chain? I had this on my 998 and thought the same thing, see if its coming from the casing.

could be a lose flywheel? mine was lose with that sort of noise. from what i can remember was the flange on the flywhee, which is held on with about 6-8 1/2 inch bolts theyed all come lose when i took the end cover off i cud move the flywheel abit clockwise and anticlockwise just an idea mate hope you get it sorted

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
