hi,new member here and just bought a mini turbo after 20 yrs without a mini *surprised* i have a sierra cosworth aswell and there are various stages you can tune them to which all give roughly the same results...is there a similiar system for the mg metro turbo engine and can anyone explain the stages and whats involved...its running standard metro turbo engine at the moment but has all the right bits elsewhere,and at a guess i would like to take it to around a reliable 140 or 150bhp..is this too much to ask...any info appreciated *smiley*

Hi mark...

welcome over from passion ford *tongue*

There not a similar system for turbo minis...

std is 94bhp

next most people mod the head to drop the CR and add an intercooler... this will take you anwhere between 110 and 160 bhp...

Then you start on silly mods like low comp pistons and the sky is the limit...

140 is never going to be utterly reliable IMO but then again a 998cc mini isnt 100% either IMO! They are minis afetr all!

hi alex,trying to learn as much as i can before i start modifying,heres a few questions if anyone can answer them

1-what cr are you looking at for 150bhp??

2-whats the best i/c??

3-what is the standard turbo capable of powerwise??

4-what is standard gearbox safe to powerwise??

i was going to take engine and box out and have box reconned with maybe straight cut gears and new clutch...then freshen up engine with a rebore..what pistons are best and what cc or bore size is the norm

regards mark

Mark,
Tricky questions to answer, I'm sure someone with more knowledge then myself will be more acurate, but for now;

1-what cr are you looking at for 150bhp??

It's related to boost and intake temp, but I would say around 8.5:1 . remember though in general terms lower CR = worse off boost running ie around town etc

2-whats the best i/c??

The one that gives best cooling with the lowest pressure difference between the input and output. A large ic gives big cooling but increases pressure drop, a small ic has limited cooling but a small pressure drop
3-what is the standard turbo capable of powerwise??

Around 250bhp

4-what is standard gearbox safe to powerwise??
50bhp = 100000miles
80bhp = 75000miles
100bhp = 50000
150bhp = 20000
200bhp = 10000
these are all guesses, but I'm sure you can out, what I'm trying to get at

Its pretty much the same CR wise as cossy... more boost is more power at the expence of drivablilty.

Intercool is easier... most people fit only what they can find or make physically fit into the front of their car!

Gearboxes are the problem, but luckily they are easy and fairly cheap... same way as high power RSTs suffer! There are things you can do to improve them, but basicaaly the box is design for about 60 bhp and we push double that and more,

4 syncro is better as its the later box and is stonger IIRC...

Quite a few people have used the rst IC... its a good shape to make fit,
