Heya all, I have a number of questions I was wondering if you guys had the answers to!!!

1) What turbo should I use?
2) I have a 1275 in bits, what engine mods should I do? (Head, block cam, crank, etc?.) or should I say, what engine mods can I get away with only doing!!! I?m thinking of using a scatter cam, and lower the comp, and have the head flowed, and maybe bigger valves. That?s it, what u think?
3) Where can I find a metro turbo set up? I?m in Tassie?.
4) Does anyone have a complete walk through of everything that has to be done to complete the conversion?

many thanks, please help me out!

regards, josh

How about strting with some research, see web site links. Turbo Phil?s site http://www.turbo-mini.com/ has wealth of information. There?s a plenty of others as well. You need to read through them and filter them to meet your needs.

If you don?t have turbo metro setup I would not bother at all finding one. T3 turbo is big so you?re better off finding a modern small charger. Try any jap import company if you have those. There are plenty in Australia. Look for any turbo from 1300 or smaller engine size.

Also modern turbodiesels have small turbos that can be used. Best is to have a word with a turbo specialist to ensure that a diesel charger can be used in gasoline application. I have a turbo from diesel waiting to be fitted (well, has been for the past 2 years or so).

I would advise against a scatter pattern cam. To be of any use the timing needs to be pretty radical, 286 cam is most likely the mildest that has any benefit of scatter design. On the other hand it is very radical for a turbo use and would need basically a race oriented engine / use. For street you should get a lot milder grind.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to have one made or do it yourself. there is a chap in Aus who has done this (for a 998 engine actually iirc, but tbh the principle is the same) this has a lot of advantages such as you can use a propper manifold and you can locate the turbo out of the way over the clutch housing.

I cant remeber what the guys name is on here, but on minispares/minimania im pretty sure it is james_be.

Otherwise either look to import a metty turbo manifold, or maybe look at the mirage manifolds and get a set of them. depends how much time you have, your ability and your inclinatin to spend ?/$

i think youll find that most people run with a metro turbo carb. the reason being that iy you are using a blow through system (as most are) then it needs to be properly sealed etc. There are a few alternatives. you can run fuel injection and a throttle body. dont completely understand this if im honest, but it doesnt seem to work too well on the a series engine. Someone has written a excelent article on why not (turbodave?)

Other than that there is no reason why you couldnt use a webber with a turbo, but iirc the only car to run one of these as standard was a lotus esprit (or lotus something!) which as you can imagine, means they are not exactly thick on the ground second hand, and very expensive new.

The other way that you could do it would be to run a suck through set up, with the carb before the turbo. this would allow you to run any carb (within reason) since there is no positive pressure and as such it does not need to be a sealed unit. Do a search on this site for blow through versus suck through. there was a good thread running a little while ago that went through it!

Lotus Esprit had Dellorto carb, not weber. Renaults used downdaught Webers 32 DAT or something that are useful items.

I have run Dellorto for some years and can honestly recommend SU anytime for performance vs. simplicity. Dellorto is a lot more complicated to set up and sensitive to different boost levels.

Stick to SU !
