Stripped my turbo engine last night, bores dont look too bad, but could do with a hone OR rebore as i hear rings are a bit steep for std pistons.

whay are the rings any different to any other 1275 rings? they look the same as the ones on the 1275 metro engine i stripped and rebuilt last month.

what are there in the way of oversized pistons? i dont want super expensive ones as this rebult is on a relitivley tight budget. what pistons do you guys use? with numbers if poss so i can get quotes from local machine shops. (looking at +20 or +40)

Cheers

I don't recall 'what' the difference is, but i know there is a difference between the AE 'std' and AE Turbo ringsets... I think it was associated with the oil control rings more than the compression rings...

what about piston choice? will any of the std range do the job IE:

AE 21251 & AE 21250
AE 21253 too high CR

want to do the turbo thing, but cant afford to be trowing this much money at a 'bit of fun'

need the cash for my daily driver.

Forgotten more than most ever know

For MODERATE boost the first two will do. I don?t know anyone who would have settled at moderate boost levels...

21253 pistons are better suited because they are of stronger design. Having said that, they do cost a bit and better pistons like Omegas are not that much more expensive in comparison.

21250/51/53 all have same dish but different comp height. So final CR is up to piston crown to deck relationship, not the dish.

My mate has a 1275 cc engine with turbo and he uses el cheapo 21250 Hepolites. One of the pistons cracked after about 1000 miles but the rest and the replacement have been reliable ever since. He used to have old Marina deep dish pistons for ages (it is a Marina block) which held for 35000 odd miles with T3. Sometimes you are lucky...

ahh, so it is possible! thats the kind of thing i needed to hear.

ive been told turbo pistons have a thicker crown for heat disipation... got me thinkig, if i used them zetec jets, i could get round it.

just a case of if it works out cheaper for better pistons or cheapy's and jets.

do you knwo anything about the rings?
