The shop that did my turbo install warned me against turning up the boost too much because naturally aspirated engines are generally set up with too small a ring gap for higher boost. They said they open the gap up on anything intended to run >9psi.
Right now I'm running 8psi boost. Would like to experiment with more boost using much stronger intercooling, but if the rings are going to break it won't be much fun.
Whaddya think?

New rings or old rings at present in the engine? I must say, I've torn down a turbo engine once imported from the UK which indeed had a ring gap "failure" Heavily scored. I never thought about it to be the heat from the turbo that did it, but maybe. Makes sense though.
Although, I think people most of times never check ring gap at all, as pistons are often delivered with rings on.

Old rings. I'll do a compression test, but the engine has always run strong and doesn't smoke.
When you get pistons with the rings installed, do you specify that they are for a turbo application? I'm wondering if everyone here is running the same gap as N/A engines anyway.

I will bet my life that on the Mini range og pistons rings are the same turbo or not. If JE or other big companies have got different rings I do not know. However, aleways gap yuur rings. If your rings are old, the gap will be bigger than when they were new. If you gapped your rings when you installed the pistons, it will be bigger now. Go ahead, have fun :)

Its up to the engine builder some times i run 14" on a ford x/flow for racing because of heat and engine revs 7000rpm

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

the intercooler will help some what

keep out of the det and the engine will survive 12 psi all day if.......

the fueling and ignition timing are set correctley!!!

14.... + psi in my book is not out of the question if the above advice is taken!!!

its your call on this one

I don't think an intercooler would help Ben, because we up the boost with that fitted :) That's the reason for fitting one isn't it :)
Combustion temperature would be the same intercooled or not if you're running "max".
