Hi,
I have a 1983 mini that I installed a 1275 engine in with a HIF44 carb.
I have also recieved a good presant from a good friend of mine, a Garrett T15 turbo for my mini.
I want to install it and understand there is a lot of work waiting for me.
as I have a lot of mechanical experience (I rebuilt my engine alone etc.) I have none in regards to turbo chargers.
Therefore I have been going over this forum pages searching for info and found a lot of it only it seems from all the info I got a little mixed up.
in general I would appreciate if someone could make some order in this matter.
1. I understand I have to cut the bulk head and found some measurements for it.
2. I understand I need to install an external electric pump. what pressure? do I need a pressure regulator? I understand I need to install a return hose, where do I connect it on the engine side?
3. I understand I need to modify my carb, I found a good thread on this forum but didnt understand what exactly I need to modify.
4. I understood that I need to fead the oil from the front of the block but where and how do I connect the return oul fead?

I know there is a search button on top and believe me I have used it a lot lately but would appreciate if someone could assist clearing things out.

BTW images could assist as well.

Thanks
Booly

2. I'm going to use an late mini MPI fuel tank, which already has a pump and return built in. You will need a metro turbo fuel reg, the return will run from this. I think 8mm fuel lines are recommended.

Yes, Im getting there.....

This is a good start.

1. To a fit a turbo in the 'standard' position behind the block you will require a bulkhead box. Some people fabricate manifolds to fit the turbo on top of the clutch housing but it is alot of work! If you use a Mirage manifold you don't have to use a bulkhead box as this manifold alters the postion of where the turbo sits.
The best thing to do is fit the box regardless of what manifold you are using though, as it is always best to have too much room than not enough! If thats possibl;e in a mini. Lol

2. A fuel pump is needed mostly mounted on the erar subframe or boot floor (basically hasa to be lower than tank outlet pipe), the standard pump runs at 2 bar as far as i can remember. Best bet is to get a metro turbo pump and you can't go far wrong. You will need a fuel pressure regulator, this is where you fuel returns back to the tank and feed to the carb, I ran my return pipe to the filler neck on the tank but alot of people connect a T peice into the feed to the fuel pump instead.

3. As for carb mods im unsure as a got mine straight off a metro turbo.

4. the feed to the turbo comes from the front of the block above the starter where the oil pressure switch is. All you need to do is connect a T peice inline and you have your oil supply to your turbo. Avonbar can provide you with this oil feed. As your now using a electric fuel pump you can ditch you mechanical one and run you oil back into the engine through the same location.

The best thing you can do, before you even enter the garage, is to make a cup of tea and spend the afternoon reading the entire FAQ and Beginners Tech section. It covers absolutely everything. Installation, running problems, tuning, dump valves, everything.

Welcome to the world of turbominis, your wallet will never forgive you. *wink*
