oh i'm sure i'll have to resort to the good old smurf shit at some stage!

One thing that is going to be a collosal PITA is the intercooler, at the moment i have no F**ing idea where thats going to go! Where most people run the pipes to and from i have a bastard great plenum!!

At the mo i'm toying with the idea of a chargecooler over the flywheel... like i haven't added enough weight already!!

is there not space to pop it under the plenum behind the grill?

you could have really short pipe work then too

Yeah, i would prob counter bore into the head and maintain the camber as you say.

Their show head had a bank of ports and chamber worked and the others left blank, as they come cast.

I should have taken some bloody pics if i had thought about it.

Their chamber looked pretty much as a normal worked one to be honest. No special shape or bias to the plug.

If i end up passing again i shall take a load for you.

Looking good there mate! looks like your setup has the same kind of cearance at the front as mine will, toying with the idea of moving the engine mounts back for a little more clearance as im trying to keep my 2wd intercooler on the front panel.

Keep us posted on where its going, its good seeing other peoples problems and solution for ideas. *wink*

Nic there is a fair bit of space under it behind the grille as there will be no dizzy, initially i was thinking i wouldn't be able to get a decent size pipe to and from a cooler there without tight bends like on Dar's setup,

i have just realised that i can use a pre-engaged starter and cut of that sticky out bit on the clutch housing to enable a pipe, that along with relocating the oil filter sould make room for a pretty big intercooler.

Si, sounds like i suspected, either minisport run the plug WAAAYY up the hole or they counterbore it deeper, they probably run it way up the hole....

Matty, what is that clearance on a cossie cooler or are you going the Bimmer head route? I do'nt really have the option of tilting the engine as the remote type box i'll be running dosen't really lend itself to that.

Well the plenum will be finished off (apart from a bung for the air temp sensor and the threads in the fuel rail and maybe annodising) at the weekend providing my argon holds out, i'll then have start looking for an intercooler and turbo so i can sort the exhaust plumbing out.

Ok, got a tad more done tonight.

Made a flange for the Vauxhall TB and attatched it via a slight bend and covered in the other end of the plenum. In theory it should now be airtight!!

I'll make up a plate to go on the TB flange and stick the injectors in and pressure test it in the week, I expect it'll need a couple of welds touched up.

Oh also, I have a question for everyone, where shall i put the IAT temp sensor? I'm thinking in the bend just afer the TB, but i could put it before the TB so it's thermally isolated from the plenum. opinions?

I would put the IAT sensor after the throttle/butterfly.

If you are using MS or another speed-density type fuel injection, you should measure the temp after the butterfly if you want accurate part throttle fuel metering.

The throttle cools the air flow down at part throttle.

I'm with Axel on this one.

Delphi (used in a lot of GM vehicles, Hyundi (sp?) and some Fords) use a plastic bodied threaded sensor for exactly the reasons you state .... rated to about 10bar too so shouldn't be a problem.

I think some of the latest Bosch sensors are plastic bodied too.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Excelent guys,

That seemed to be the right thing to do to me, although I hadn't heard about the throttle cooling at part throttle before.

I have heard a lot of people recomend putting them at the far end of the plenum, seems a bit wrong to me, i would expect its best where all the air will flow past it (just after the TB)

Well i'll keep a look out for some of those plackie sensors, failing that i'll make a plackie bung and put an M6 Mpi one in it.

I would personaly put the IAT in the middle of the plenum, thus reading an average temp across the plenum. The air at the throttle is not necissaraly the temp that enters the port, like wise the air at the other end of the plenum is not whats entering the cylinder furthest away from the sensor. Air is a funny thing and when you add in the heat sink that is the aluminium plenum, air temp tends to vary. Anyway, its not going to be much of a difference and MS will compensate with lambda feed back. Its nice though, to get close to the base map as you can in the first instance.

Rover put their IAT in the port runner clossest to the throttle on the T series turbo and NA cars and used a standard IAT sensor mounted in a plastic insulating boss.

Yea going bimmer route. As its a 1275 block it won' fit under a standard bonnet, so I was thinking of moving it back a touch as the bonnet is higher the further back you go.

From the block the back of the cooler only sits 80mm away at present with about a 40mm gap at the front of the cooler. If the cooler is shuffled right forward it sits 120mm away from the block, and then you've got to allow for the head overhang pipes etc.

Front rad doesn't help with space up front either, you might be best trying to squeeze it there. Im guessing that your tryin to avoid butchering the front?

Yeah, deffo want to avoid any outwardly obvious mods apart from the wheels.

Hi there mate if your still bothered about the welding looking rough when youve finished you could get a cheap dremel or similar and some drinding wheels and if you get a polishing kit with that you could polish it then too.

Yeah, I know,

I was just teasing, aquired the bimmer head the other day and it had to be dropped on the block as it was just sitting there begging for it.

It will eventually go on my daily driver as a N/A 1380 once this is finished, thought i'd best grab one before they all dry up.

LOL @ Nic!

Well being the type of person I am i turned up a nice bung for the IAT sensor rather than just stuffing a tap through the plenum, trouble is the plenum is now big enough that it dissipates heat as quick as my tig can put it into it, as i found out trying to weld the bung in......*oh well*

Thought to myself i'll pressure test the plenum anyway, leaks like a fucking sieve!! mostly from the head to plenum joints partially due to not being completly flat, partialy due to gaskets made from a cereal packet... I guess i'll have to get a couple of pig blow torches on it to really preheat it and maybe get hold of some helium to sort the IAT bung the other bits should touch up ok (fingers crossed*indifferent*)

So to take my mind of that faliure.... I started looking at fitting the intercooler, had a bit of a trim of the front pannel and "fettled" the transfer case where the starter fits (I cut about 10mm off so it will be flush with thefront face of the starter)

result is this, enough room for end tanks, and will fit behind the grille.

just continue with that old plenum but use it to mock the stuff up on, and then make/get made a slinky jobbie

im liking that intercooler location

Cheers Nic, should hopefully get some air through it despite the 4 massive spotlights in front of it, although they'll probably only be there in the winter...

Thats what i was thinking of doing, this plenum hasn't cost me much, plus i've learned how to tig on it, there's plenty of stuff i'd change, so i'll get it running on this one and do a better one later on!
