For the last month or so, my computers been running really slow.

In particular when i have windows media Player open it quite often freezes for minutes at a time.

All the time the blue light on the front flashes away saying its working at something, but quite often stays on really bright for ages.

If i close down all programs and just leave it, the blue light continues to flash and stay on, even if i've left it all day (6 or 7 hours).

if i open up the task manager and go to processes, there something like 70 processes running

Theres still bout 60 GByte free on the hard disk.

Is there anything i can do or check cos its really starting to annoy me going so slow

Its Windows XP, celeron D processor 2.93Ghz, 448 mB RAM, 80 GByte hard drive

Cheers

Dave

Celerons slow right down when they get busy with one thing, so that wont help, but you should probably do a spyware/adware/virus scan to make sure your computer is clean. Try Adaware and AVG Virus scanner (both can be had for free)

probably just getting full of junk then. try removing any old programs you no longer run, and running a registry cleaner.

Firstly remove norton. Does not stop viruses as anyone that writes one tests it against norton. try a program called crap cleaner to remove all the crap on your computer. install zonealarm firewall and avast antivirus. once all of these are done click start, select run type msconfig and remove any programs from startup that are not required i.e. most of them.

You PC will still be slow as Windows is poorly written and bloated with outdated code.

If you a fast, virus proof, secure computer for free try this link:-

Ha ha, unless you want to run any programs released commercially *wink* - I love linux, but would never reccommend it to a casual PC user.

My mum uses it fine you can do anything windows does except games. I agree with you it's not for most people unfortunately. It's not harder just different. Shame asit's far superior to windows.
just glad I am not the only linux user here :)

I'd be willing to bet that it's Norton thats slowing your system down. That thing sucks up operating memory. You said you have it set to automatically run in the background, right? Try turning it off to see what effect it has.

Yep replace Norton with something that doesn't use all your resources and actually works.

I like Trend pcillin, Its a single program with a single process doesn't slow the PC down at all. My daughter in Uni used to come home with all kinds of crap on her laptop ( from music download sites) but since I installed Trend its been clean.

Plus in my case I run quite a few computers myself and look after my kids and mates ones as well so I buy 10 licenses a year for $90.... good deal.....
