Im trying to design a circuit that turns a 24v DC motor 360 degrees clockwise then stop and go back the other way to the start position.

Im trying to make it work using just relays and switches, and I can't think for the life of me how to wire it...its been a while since designing circuits!

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Hope you can understand my scribble !

If ya click on the scribble you get bigger scribble

The 2 red boxes are 2 double pole relays.
The red box(oh argh) is a two way switch with + to the common connection

I can see how that would change direction, but how does it detect a full rotation and then change direction.

The problem with trying to do this with a streight DC motor is that you will need some sort of detection on how far it has rotated. A limit switch or an encoder, something like that. I guess you have this otherwise it is very difficult. The speed of the motor will be dependant on load so it will be very difficult to do it with a timer circuit.

Maybe a stepper motor would be more suitable, but then that is a whole load more problems......

The first question I should ask is why do you want to do this? What it the motor driving, there maybe a simpler way to achieve what you want?

How big is the motor- current draw, wattage etc.

Agree with Ben, stepper motor is the way to go imho.

Interested to know what this is for though...

Would have to have a key on the motor shaft,to flick the switch.
Depends on speed really, may have to flick the switch 20 or so degrees before it is meant to change direction, then hit a dead stop. That will require 2 switchs

Another way I thought was just have the motor going round one direction, with a connecting rod to another wheel, such that the radius(the conecting rod is mounted at) is double that of the motor wheel on the driven wheel

Never thought of using it as a valve lapper...could use it for that after!

Its actually a halloween (sp?) special. Lol

A mate of mine is making a cofin that opens with a skeleton indside. the plan was, using a proximity sensor the motor is to lever the door open and shut and reset 'till the sensor is triggured again.

I suggested using a wiper motor mechanism but he's already got all the bits for the circuit, were using a similar method to the mini wiper motor to stop the motor after one revolution then when the door shuts it triggers a N.O switch something like a interior light switch to reset. Neither of use could think of how to reverse the motor using switches though!

The motor is geared down really low to make the door open slowly, so there should be no load what so ever (within reason)!

Im trying to convince him to plum in a smoke machine aswell. Lol

It would be much easier to use a wiper motor. What you need is a pole-change circuit.

Obviously the contacts with forward and reverse on them are in the forward and reverse relays respectively.

What i would caution is to pick your relay carefully, switching a 24 volt DC load over a relay isn't to be taken lightly.

Wil, those drawings look errily like signal or point motor prints.

Strange that, isn't it. My job title is Signalling Investigation Engineer, so it wasn't too hard to come up with that circuit.

Good point about the contacts too. My circuit was modified from a points motor drive circuit, and they use some serious contacts with magnets next to them to draw the spark.
