Found a small turbo charger in a breakers yard on a 1.8 toyota diesel, the compressors look small and was just wondering if it would be possible to use this on a turbo mini before i go to the effort of removing it from the car. I read a post before that the oil seals are different in a diesel turbo before am i correct can these be changed, or is it best lookin for another turbo.

Feedback please,
Barkiboi

Never heard anything about the oil seals being different ? why would they be ?
Anyway, my mates been using various diesel Turbo on his car for years, so if it's going to be a reasonable match then go ahead.
You could do with knowing the AR ratios, then somebody should be able to tell you if it's worth bothering with.

Afternoon all - some serious thread resurrection here!
A guy from work recently had the turbo blow on his 1.4 TDCi Fiesta, so I asked him if I could have the old one to have a look at/play with.
Now I've been thinking about a supercharger fit so haven't really thought about turbo's, but this thing is tiny compared with the T3 fitted to my RS Turbo years ago.

Now, I'm trying to pick up on the AR figures and the like but I'm having trouble identifying make/model etc for this turbo.
The plate on it appears to have a serial number on it. The numbers cast into it are:
5435 101 4861
SIM 3590/3
KP35 - 487599
The Ford FINIS code (from the new turbo box) is 1488986, Ford part no. 2S6Q 6K682AD
As I said, its knackered:

but, plumbing issues aside, would something this size be suitable?
ETA - theres also a triangle cast into the body of the turbo, with a 'K' in the centre of the triangle.

It's a Kuhnle Kopp & Kaush unit.

Probably a bit on the small side.

EDIT: Map:

EDIT2: 0.08 m3/sec is about 12 lbs/min, so OK up to 110hp ish. OK on a low boost 998, but not as good as the T2.

Such a quick reply - Cheers Paul!
Another step in increasing my knowledge then.
If diesels can be used succesfully though, there should be a good selection about these days.

ive heard that there was a difference too, ive heard something about seals being different, and when i was advetising a gt1752 for a mate a while ago no one wanted it as it was a diesel spec one off a master van, apparantly with a different material turbine.

Some one would have bought that, but not at the price it was going for

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

As I understand it, with a diesel turbo it only matters if you are intending to use it in a suck through system.

Then it will apparently suck the turbo oil through and dump it into your engine because there is a negative pressure on the atmospheric side, especially on a closed throttle, of course.

I guess matching the turbo might be an issue because IIRC diesel turbos are designed for lower revs and might not take kindly to being spun harder.

Now awaiting being corrected by those on here who know lots more than I.

Had the thought today, while in the garage - before I start taking this apart (thereby ensuring that it never works properly again), is this of any use to anybody? Perhaps as an exchange unit?
Free to a good home, otherwise turned into a pile of bits!

have seen and used dieles turbo's on petrol motors without issue, infact on teh look out for a specific diesel turbo for my mini justnow :)

turbo rpm and engine rpm are not related. a turbo pushing 2 bar of boost through a 2 litr diesel at 3krpm is going to be working just as hard as a turbo pushing less boost through a smaller petrol engine at high rpm. Its a good myth though, keeps the diesel turbo's nice and cheap :)

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)
