Got my J reg Mini just sat in the garage twiddling it's thumbs. Am looking to either do a 16v engine conversion or turbocharge the old girl. Am leaning more towards turbo'ing her but just wondered what sort of power is achievable on a standard turbo engine in good nick? And what sort of 0-60 time that would equate to in an ordinary Mini wearing 13" alloys...?

Standard Metro turbo engine was 94bhp.

That's what I was thinking. My heart wants to go with the turbo approach but my head's telling me to fit a B16 VTEC engine instead :( I'm ideally looking for sub 6 seconds 0-60 which I reckon requires minimum 150bhp...? |

way the cost up firstley Jim and have you got the skills to compleat this all the Way! ? Well I'm not spanner shy, if that's what you mean :) I can't weld (yet) but am planning on rectifying that soon. But any structural welding would be done by my mate (he runs a repair / bodyshop). Have got my own engine crane, a Halfords screwdriver set and an adjustable spanner. I don't need anything else, do I?
Just kidding
I actually bought all the kit to turbo the old girl quite a while ago (Mirage manifold set, Metro Turbo engine, couple of extra turbos, brakes, brake lines, fuel reg, fuel return T-piece, fuel line etc.) but simply had no funds and no time, so ended up selling it all as a job lot :( Was pretty gutted at that, TBH. So here I am again - back on the merry-go-round
The extent of my hands-on experience is - replacing exhausts, basic servicing (oil, plugs, filters etc.), brake pads, discs, replace copper brake lines, some basic electrics (stereos, etc.). Have also stripped a big 6 cylinder Nissan engine's ancillaries right down leaving just the head/block/sump. Also done some bodywork (inc. anglegrinding, fibreglass, filler, etc.). Anything you think I should get to grips with before looking at this as a realistic project? Would be picking up one of Bill Sollis' rebuild videos as a fallback :) |

The 1380 build DVD should be considered essential viewing at this stage, not a 'fallback'...

I'd also suggest the book "Tuning The A-Series engine" by David Vizard.

I'm at this point now. Have 100BHP, and facing the choice of uprating gearbox and clutch to go further. Of course at that point a new shortblock and head would be nice, go to 14psi, etc. Not really interested in grenading the transmission in my daily driver for a little more thrill. 1275 with Back Door Turbo |
