ok, from the begining:-
car had a misfire and plugs were new, so i had a look at the leads. they were all split, so i repleaced them with origioinal MG leads, and cleaned the dizzy cap while i was at it.
then while test driving it too see that had cured it (it had), i snapped the fan belt.
luckily i was about 500metres from home so i got home and changed it.
all was good for a couple days apart from a slight fan belt squeak but it didnt happen much then stopped so i put it out of my mind.
the other weekend my battery went flat, while i was out. only 20min after a 30mile drive (where it developed a very slight misfire under load). so i tried to get it home and i lost all electrics on the way-- no lights.
didnt touch it for a week, just drove it now to see if it will charge or anything. the battery was charging but after 2miles there was, quite possibly the worst misfire i have ever heard. it sounded and looked like a fireworks display.
got home banging away and noticed its worse with the lights on.

any ideas??
it only misses under load; ie. if i put my foot down/it hits boost/high revs.

plugs look fairly new and still good, leads are 3weeks old, cleaned dizzy cap at the same time.
tappets need adjusting (can hear it), and car smells like its overfuelling and will turn the car behind black if i rev it.

any help is much appreciated

maybe your fanbelt is loose, so isnt charging the battery enough to give the full voltage to the coil and igntion module

nah, the fan belt is sufficiently tight, im gonna get a coil tomorrow and see if that sorts it.
and get a battery charger while im at it.

quick qu. - if i have a flat battery and my headlights don't work, is this cause for concern?

Yes as the electronic ign won't work properly due to low bat voltage

A flat battery and a alternator thats not charging properly will cause it as i have found in the past. Also the coil will also cause it...and am currently having probs with mine too.

When changing your leads did you disturb the wiring loom going to your N/S front light.

After i changed my leads once the loom came unclipped from the loom clip along the 'slam panel', drove the car for a few miles and the loom got sliced by the fan on the alternator, could be the reason for your fan belt snapping if the alternator jammed up momentarily and could cause a short in your loom!

What reading did you get for the alternator output? When the engine is running your should get nearly 14V at the battery,

If the coil doesnt sort it, i would go through the front loom and make sure there is no shorting.

1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

in this order ........

1/ make sure the altinator is charging!

2/ go for the coil

3/ go for the distrib cap

4/ go for over fueling (ie) the float needle is sticking!!

5/ check the compression ratio
burned out valve maybe ??.....

6 / i presume that its a turbo engine ?....

if so try the Turbo Dave magic T peice trick

ok, put the battery on charge last night. woke up this morning to find it totally dead.
so, new battery needed. i drove it up the road and back just for the sake of it and it was pretty good with no electrics on. turn on the wipers and it started to run shit, then i turned on the lights and it stalled.
so off to halfords for a battery and multi-meter *oh well*
