Just stripped the thread in one of the holes in my steel flywheel, what would be a good size to tap them out to,with easily available hardend studs (ford headbolts ?)metric/unc /unf ?

Yeah right

Will 12.9 rated allan key bolts be up to the job,as they are free from work, but they are all metric so m10 12 or 14

What do you mean? I've helicoiled these with good luck previously.

Standard Metric threads would be too coarse in my opinion, I'd be looking to either source some metric fine (hard to get and taps expensive) or UNF as suggested.

Don't dismiss the Helicoils, I once helicoiled an M11 cylinder head fixing into an alloy block, I didn't think it would work, yet I then tightened it to 40Nm, +300 degrees (e.g. fucking tight) and it worked a treat.

Verto flywheels are M10 x 1.5 which IMO is borderline anyway.

However the 3/8UNF thread has pulled out there is unlikely to be enough "meat" there to successfully tap at M10, so you are going to have to go to M12, with pitch 1.75, which IMO is too coarse into the flywheel......

Don't think. Try it, and get experience.

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

I agree with Tom, 3/8 and M10 are way too close to just re-tap.

I think it would be best to re-drill to 1/2 unf, same pitch larger area of contact due to the bolt having a larger circumfrance.

Of course you will need to re-drill your pulley aswell to accomadate for the larger bolts.

News flash

Tapped to m10 x 1.5 as I could do that with engine still in(It's a metty !)

good enougth to get it off

Now I'm thinking why not have 6 puller threads in the flywheel, then you got 2 lots for a std 3 puller on knock up a six bolt puller.

Clutch was still in one piece, but the primary gear had started to sieze on the end of the crank, due to a slight oil leak and some clutch slippage(dust I think)
